Erie, PASeptember 12, 2027
Four runs per week for 18 weeks: two easy runs, one midweek aerobic run, and one long run. The schedule stays fixed; the guidance below shows how to choose terrain, rehearse conditions, and prepare for the Erie Marathon at Presque Isle course.
The Erie Marathon runs two loops of Presque Isle, a sandy peninsula that curls out into Lake Erie, and the organizers put total elevation change across the whole course at under 250 feet. Runners come here for one reason, and it isn't the view.
The 18-week window opens around May 9, 2027. Weeks one through 17 keep the normal Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday rhythm. Only race week moves so the marathon lands on its actual weekday. If the window has passed, do not skip ahead or cram missed mileage into the time left.
Open any week to see all seven days. Week 1 is open to start.

Race
Marathon — 26.2 mi
It begins at 15 miles per week, peaks at 40, and asks you to manage schedule changes and missed training yourself.
Current mileage, recent longest run, marathon experience, goal, and available days decide which plans rank first.
The mileage builds your engine. Your long-run route, pacing, fueling, and clothing rehearsals make that fitness specific to this race.
Train for the Erie Marathon by getting very good at holding one pace on flat ground, and by running into wind on purpose. With under 250 feet of total elevation change there's no terrain to force a gear change and no downhill to recover on, so your pacing has to do all of that work by itself.
Build two or three long runs where the middle 14 to 16 miles sit within a few seconds of goal pace, on the flattest route available. Flat running loads the same muscles at the same angle for hours, which is a specific fatigue that hilly training doesn't prepare you for. Rolling terrain quietly rotates the load. Presque Isle won't.
Then do the wind work. Once a week, run an out and back so the return leg heads straight into the breeze, and practice easing your effort instead of fighting to hold pace. That single habit is worth minutes here. Runners who try to defend their splits into a lake wind at mile 18 usually hand it all back by mile 22.
Rehearse the second lap too. Run one long training loop twice rather than a point to point, so the feeling of starting a familiar circuit on tired legs isn't new information on race day.
Keep the plan honest. This free schedule contains no speedwork. Apply the course guidance through route choice and race rehearsal without turning easy days into extra workouts. If your goal calls for marathon-pace work, compare it with First Marathon Plus.
Do several Erie Marathon at Presque Isle long runs on uninterrupted flat ground. With few terrain changes to reset your stride, steady pacing and late-run form matter more than hill speed.
There are no verified race morning temperature norms available for this event, so check the forecast rather than assuming. What matters more than the number on this course is wind, because Presque Isle is a low peninsula with Lake Erie on one side and the bay on the other and nothing to shelter you. Train some long runs in a real breeze.
Miles 16 to 22 on the second lap, running scenery you already saw two hours earlier with no hill to change your rhythm and, on a windy day, open lake air in your face.
Beginner-friendly does not mean couch-to-marathon. Week one asks for four runs, 15 total miles, and a six-mile long run.
The 2027 Erie Marathon at Presque Isle is scheduled for September 12, 2027, so the 18-week window opens around May 9, 2027. Weeks one through 17 keep the normal weekly rhythm and Sunday long run; only the final race week shifts to the event's actual weekday. If that date has already passed, do not compress 18 weeks of mileage into a shorter window.

Four run days can be enough when 15 miles in week one is not a sudden jump and you can protect the long run most weeks. This schedule builds to a 40-mile peak and a 20-mile long run. A runner chasing an aggressive time or already supporting more volume may fit a higher-mileage plan better.
Yes, genuinely. The organizers put total elevation change across the whole course at under 250 feet, run over two loops of Presque Isle State Park using the old lake road and the main park road. It's one of the flatter road marathons in the United States, which is exactly why the 2,000 entry cap fills.
It's the reason most people travel there. The course is USATF certified and accepted for Boston qualifying, and the flat two loop profile removes most of the ways a course can cost you time. The organizers do caution that they can't tell you which Boston year a qualifying time will reach.
Choose your race for its current date, course profile, typical race-morning conditions, and specific long-run guidance.
