Erie Marathon at Presque Isle training plan: course, start dates, and plan options
Erie, PASeptember 12, 2027
The Erie Marathon runs two loops of Presque Isle, a sandy peninsula that curls out into Lake Erie, and the organizers put total elevation change across the whole course at under 250 feet. Runners come here for one reason, and it isn't the view.

That flatness is the entire product, and it's why the field is capped at 2,000. A course with nothing in it also gives you nothing back: no hill to break your rhythm, no descent to stretch out on, and on an exposed spit of land, sometimes a wind that has crossed open water with nothing to slow it down.

The course: two loops of a sand spit, on park roads
The Erie Marathon at Presque Isle covers two loops of Presque Isle State Park, run on the old lake road and the main park road. The organizers bill it as flat and fast, with under 250 feet of total elevation change over the full 26.2 miles. Aid sits roughly every mile, and the course is USATF certified.
Two loops means you meet the whole course early. Everything you're going to see, you'll have seen by about mile 13, and the second lap is run purely on what you have left. Some runners love knowing exactly what's ahead. Others find that passing a landmark for the second time is where the race gets psychologically expensive.
Presque Isle is a peninsula, so exposure is the other variable. There's no city grid to break the wind, and long stretches have water on both sides. On a calm morning this is one of the easier 26.2 miles in the country. On a breezy one you'll be pushing against moving air for a large share of two laps.
How to train for the Erie Marathon
Train for the Erie Marathon by getting very good at holding one pace on flat ground, and by running into wind on purpose. With under 250 feet of total elevation change there's no terrain to force a gear change and no downhill to recover on, so your pacing has to do all of that work by itself.
Build two or three long runs where the middle 14 to 16 miles sit within a few seconds of goal pace, on the flattest route available. Flat running loads the same muscles at the same angle for hours, which is a specific fatigue that hilly training doesn't prepare you for. Rolling terrain quietly rotates the load. Presque Isle won't.
Then do the wind work. Once a week, run an out and back so the return leg heads straight into the breeze, and practice easing your effort instead of fighting to hold pace. That single habit is worth minutes here. Runners who try to defend their splits into a lake wind at mile 18 usually hand it all back by mile 22.
Rehearse the second lap too. Run one long training loop twice rather than a point to point, so the feeling of starting a familiar circuit on tired legs isn't new information on race day.
Getting in
Entry is capped at 2,000, and that cap is the main obstacle. The race is well known as a qualifier, so it draws runners who register the day entry opens. Sign up as early as you can rather than waiting for a training block to begin, and note that the organizers say the cap can be reduced by the state park or emergency management.
Where does the Erie Marathon at Presque Isle get hard?
Miles 16 to 22 on the second lap, running scenery you already saw two hours earlier with no hill to change your rhythm and, on a windy day, open lake air in your face.
What is the weather like at the Erie Marathon at Presque Isle?
There are no verified race morning temperature norms available for this event, so check the forecast rather than assuming. What matters more than the number on this course is wind, because Presque Isle is a low peninsula with Lake Erie on one side and the bay on the other and nothing to shelter you. Train some long runs in a real breeze.
Is the Erie Marathon at Presque Isle a good Boston qualifier?
The Erie Marathon is a USATF certified Boston qualifier and it has built its reputation on that. The organizers say plainly that the course can be used for qualifying standards, while noting they can't tell you which Boston year a given time will get you into, since that depends on the cutoff. Confirm the current process with the BAA.
Is the Erie Marathon at Presque Isle a good first marathon?
It's a sensible first marathon if you can commit early. The course is flat, aid comes about every mile, and there are 14 restrooms along the route. The catch is the roughly six hour limit: roads start reopening from mile 14 at about the three hour, fourteen minute mark, and slower runners finish on the all purpose trail.
Erie Marathon at Presque Isle questions, answered.
Is the Erie Marathon flat?
Yes, genuinely. The organizers put total elevation change across the whole course at under 250 feet, run over two loops of Presque Isle State Park using the old lake road and the main park road. It's one of the flatter road marathons in the United States, which is exactly why the 2,000 entry cap fills.
Is the Erie Marathon a good Boston qualifier?
It's the reason most people travel there. The course is USATF certified and accepted for Boston qualifying, and the flat two loop profile removes most of the ways a course can cost you time. The organizers do caution that they can't tell you which Boston year a qualifying time will reach.
How windy does it get at Presque Isle?
Windy enough to plan for. Presque Isle is a low peninsula with Lake Erie on one side and Presque Isle Bay on the other, so there's no shelter for long stretches. On a still day the course is as fast as it looks. On a breezy one you're running into moving air for much of two laps.
How hard is it to get into the Erie Marathon?
The field is capped at 2,000, and the organizers note the park or emergency management can reduce it further. Because the race has a strong qualifier reputation, entries move quickly once registration opens. Treat the sign up date as more urgent than the date your training block starts.
