Sioux Falls, SDSeptember 19, 2027
Four runs per week for 18 weeks: two easy runs, one midweek aerobic run, and one long run. The schedule stays fixed; the guidance below shows how to choose terrain, rehearse conditions, and prepare for the Sioux Falls Marathon course.
The Sioux Falls Marathon finishes on the track at Howard Wood Field, which means the last thing you do after 26.2 miles is run part of a lap on a rubberized surface with a stadium around you. It begins at 6:45 a.m. in the parking lot just east of that same stadium.
The 18-week window opens around May 16, 2027. Weeks one through 17 keep the normal Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday rhythm. Only race week moves so the marathon lands on its actual weekday. If the window has passed, do not skip ahead or cram missed mileage into the time left.
Open any week to see all seven days. Week 1 is open to start.

Race
Marathon — 26.2 mi
It begins at 15 miles per week, peaks at 40, and asks you to manage schedule changes and missed training yourself.
Current mileage, recent longest run, marathon experience, goal, and available days decide which plans rank first.
The mileage builds your engine. Your long-run route, pacing, fueling, and clothing rehearsals make that fitness specific to this race.
Train for the Sioux Falls Marathon on flat paved trail, and train your pacing rather than your climbing. With roughly 610 feet of gain across the whole distance and long stretches on the city's recreation path, nothing in the terrain will force you to change gear, which means every pacing mistake on race day is entirely yours.
Do your long runs on a bike path if you can find one. Trail surfaces have a slight camber and a repetitive footstrike, and legs that only know varied road terrain notice it around mile 18. Add calf and hip strength work for the same reason. An unvarying stride loads the same tissue over and over with no relief.
Then rehearse the finish. A track finish is worth training for, because your last quarter mile happens on a fast surface with a visible line, and runners who have never practiced a hard close leave time out on the track. Finish two or three long runs with a controlled, genuinely hard 400.
Keep the plan honest. This free schedule contains no speedwork. Apply the course guidance through route choice and race rehearsal without turning easy days into extra workouts. If your goal calls for marathon-pace work, compare it with First Marathon Plus.
Do several Sioux Falls Marathon long runs on uninterrupted flat ground. With few terrain changes to reset your stride, steady pacing and late-run form matter more than hill speed.
Mid September mornings in Sioux Falls usually start near 57F with humidity around 90% under clear skies, warming to an average high of 74F. The humidity at a 6:45 a.m. start is the part people underestimate, and the last hour of the race can get genuinely warm. Do your long runs mid-morning through the summer rather than at dawn.
The southern loop and the trail miles back toward the stadium in the last ten, where the course flattens out, empties out and stops changing, and there is nothing external left holding your pace together.
Beginner-friendly does not mean couch-to-marathon. Week one asks for four runs, 15 total miles, and a six-mile long run.
The 2027 Sioux Falls Marathon is scheduled for September 19, 2027, so the 18-week window opens around May 16, 2027. Weeks one through 17 keep the normal weekly rhythm and Sunday long run; only the final race week shifts to the event's actual weekday. If that date has already passed, do not compress 18 weeks of mileage into a shorter window.

Four run days can be enough when 15 miles in week one is not a sudden jump and you can protect the long run most weeks. This schedule builds to a 40-mile peak and a 20-mile long run. A runner chasing an aggressive time or already supporting more volume may fit a higher-mileage plan better.
Close to it. The Sioux Falls Marathon covers about 610 feet of climbing across 26.2 miles inside a range of under 200 feet, with much of the route on the city's paved recreation trail system. There is no hill worth planning around. The challenge is pacing discipline on terrain that never changes.
It starts at 6:45 a.m. in the large parking lot east of Howard Wood Field and finishes on the stadium track. In between, the route passes through the historic district, downtown Sioux Falls, Falls Park on North Phillips Avenue, Terrace Park and Fawick Park, plus a long southern residential and trail loop.
Choose your race for its current date, course profile, typical race-morning conditions, and specific long-run guidance.
