Oakland Marathon training plan: course, start dates, and plan options
Oakland, CAMarch 21, 2027
The Oakland Marathon sends you out onto the Bay Bridge for roughly nine of its middle miles, running to Yerba Buena Island and back over open water. That is not a scenic footnote, it is the part of the race that decides your finishing time, and it changes what your last three months of training should contain.

The opening ten miles are pure city: Little Saigon, Grand Avenue, Piedmont Avenue, downtown, Telegraph Avenue and both banks of Lake Merritt. Then the course leaves every bit of that behind for a long, exposed grade with no shade, no turns and no crowd. About 1,061 runners finished in 2026.

The course: city miles, then nine miles of bridge
The Oakland Marathon starts at 7 a.m. on Lake Merritt Boulevard in front of the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts. Miles 1 to 5 run through Little Saigon and up Grand and Piedmont Avenues past the east side of Lake Merritt, and miles 6 to 10 cover downtown Oakland, Telegraph Avenue and the lake's north and west banks.
From roughly mile 11 to mile 20 the race is on the Bay Bridge, out to Yerba Buena Island and back, with the course topping out near 200 feet. That means a long, steady rise over open water on the way out and a long descent on the way home, which the organizer describes as downhill miles coming off the bridge. The last stretch is flat through Jack London Square to a finish back at the Kaiser Center.
How to train for the Oakland Marathon
Train for the Oakland Marathon by preparing for ten unbroken miles with no turns, no shade and no crowd. The bridge section runs from roughly mile 11 to mile 20, rising steadily toward 200 feet over open water and then descending, which asks something completely different from you than the stop-start city miles that come before it.
Do long uninterrupted tempo blocks, eight to ten miles at goal effort with no stops and no traffic lights, so holding concentration that long feels ordinary. Add downhill running through the last six weeks, because you come off the bridge around mile 20 and quads that have never practiced descending will not enjoy the flat finish through Jack London Square. Seek out exposed, windy running too, since there is nothing at all to hide behind out there.
Getting in
Registration goes through Race Roster, and a pre-sale opens well ahead of race weekend at a lower price than late entry. The marathon starts at 7 a.m. on Lake Merritt Boulevard in front of the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts and carries a seven hour limit, roughly 16 minute miles from the gun. Race proceeds support Eat. Learn. Play., the foundation started by Stephen and Ayesha Curry, which is part of why the course stays so firmly inside the city rather than skirting its edges.
Where does the Oakland Marathon get hard?
The outbound bridge miles, roughly 11 to 16, a sustained exposed climb toward Yerba Buena Island with no shelter, no shade and nobody on the roadside.
What is the weather like at the Oakland Marathon?
Race morning normally starts near 50F with humidity around 86% and a light southerly breeze, warming only to a high near 62F. That is close to perfect running weather in the city, but the bridge miles are fully exposed over open water, so whatever wind is blowing that morning you will feel every bit of it. Run some long efforts into the wind rather than tucked behind buildings.
Is the Oakland Marathon a good Boston qualifier?
It is a Boston qualifier, and the qualifying rate has fallen noticeably in recent years: 4.2% of finishers ran qualifying times in 2026 and 4.4% in 2025, against 8.5% in 2024 and 11.2% in 2022. Plan against the recent numbers rather than the older ones, and budget for the bridge miles costing you more than a flat city loop would.
Is the Oakland Marathon a good first marathon?
It can work, and the seven hour limit is generous, but be honest about the middle of the race. A first-timer will spend two hours or more on the bridge with no crowd, no spectator support and a sustained grade in each direction. If all of your long runs have happened on a busy city loop, that section will feel far longer than its mileage.
Oakland Marathon questions, answered.
Does the Oakland Marathon really run on the Bay Bridge?
Yes. From roughly mile 11 to mile 20 the course heads out onto the Bay Bridge to Yerba Buena Island and turns around, which is close to nine miles over open water. The course high point is near 200 feet, and the organizer describes the miles coming back off the bridge as downhill.
Is the Oakland Marathon a hard course?
Moderate on paper, harder in practice. Total climbing is around 764 feet with a high point near 200 feet, which is not much. The difficulty is the shape: ten city miles, then nine exposed bridge miles with a sustained grade each way, then a flat finish on legs that have just spent a long time descending.
What is the time limit for the Oakland Marathon?
Seven hours from the 7 a.m. gun, which is roughly a 16 minute per mile pace. The start and the finish are both at the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts on Lake Merritt Boulevard, so gear check and the finish area sit in the same place you left in the morning.
How should I pace the Oakland Marathon?
Conservatively through the city and honestly on the bridge. The first ten miles roll through Grand and Piedmont Avenues and around Lake Merritt, which tempts a quick start. Save it. The sustained climb out toward Yerba Buena Island is where an aggressive first hour gets collected, and the mile 20 descent needs quads with something left.
