The course: 25 feet of elevation and an ocean beside you

The Yuengling Shamrock Marathon is a flat, mostly out and back course in Virginia Beach with 270 feet of total climbing and only about 25 feet between its lowest and highest points. It starts at 42nd Street and Atlantic Avenue, finishes on the boardwalk near the King Neptune statue, and allows seven and a half hours, roughly a 17:09 mile.

The organizers describe running north through the resort neighborhoods, then along tree-lined Shore Drive as it winds beside First Landing State Park, then south across Rudee Inlet and through stately neighborhoods to the southernmost turnaround, where there is entertainment waiting, before heading back north to the boardwalk. Water stops come about every 1.5 miles and gels are handed out at miles 5.5 and 19. The course is certified as VA22041RT, and the organizers count 22 local run clubs set up along the oceanfront.

How to train for Shamrock

Training for the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon is pacing and wind work. With 270 feet of climbing over the whole course and a 25-foot elevation range, nothing about the terrain will slow you down or force a recovery. The one thing that can wreck the day is a north wind, which has averaged near 11 mph on race morning.

Because it runs out and back you meet the wind in both directions, and the return is the half that decides things. Make a habit of turning into the wind for the last 6 to 8 miles of a long run instead of setting off into it while you are fresh. The other cost of flat ground is a stride that never varies, so build long runs around extended goal-pace blocks rather than surges, and get comfortable holding one gear for three hours. The Rudee Inlet crossing is the only rise worth a thought, and it is a small one.

Getting in

Entry is open with no qualifying time, through shamrockmarathon.com, and the minimum age is 16. The 7:30 a.m. start and the seven and a half hour limit mean the course stays open into the afternoon, which takes a lot of pressure off a first attempt. Register early if you also want oceanfront lodging, since the race anchors a busy weekend on the beach. Entry fees are not listed here because they were not verifiable on the official site.
