Weeks 1–2
Dec 28, 2026–Jan 10, 2027
Hold close to your current volume, establish the weekly rhythm, and make sure the opening load is honest.
Oakland, CAMarch 21, 2027
Start around December 27, 2026. The calendar below gives each phase a real date, then the course guidance shows where to make the build specific to Oakland Marathon.
The Oakland Marathon sends you out onto the Bay Bridge for roughly nine of its middle miles, running to Yerba Buena Island and back over open water. That is not a scenic footnote, it is the part of the race that decides your finishing time, and it changes what your last three months of training should contain.
Use this window when your recent training is steady and the opening week will not be a mileage jump. If you are returning after a long break, twelve weeks is too little room to rebuild and peak at the same time.
These dates define the job of each phase. Your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days still decide the actual workouts inside them.
Weeks 1–2
Dec 28, 2026–Jan 10, 2027
Hold close to your current volume, establish the weekly rhythm, and make sure the opening load is honest.
Weeks 3–7
Jan 11, 2027–Feb 14, 2027
Grow the long run and weekly work with step-back weeks intact. There is no room to repay missed mileage.
Weeks 8–10
Feb 15, 2027–Mar 7, 2027
Complete the most race-specific long runs, rehearse fueling, and practice the terrain that will decide the final 10K.
Weeks 11–12
Mar 8, 2027–Mar 21, 2027
Reduce volume, keep the routine familiar, and arrive on race day without trying to squeeze in one more big week.
Course-specific work starts early in a 12-week build. Put the race's terrain and expected conditions into long runs once the opening weeks feel controlled, without adding extra hard days.
Read the full race guideTrain for the Oakland Marathon by preparing for ten unbroken miles with no turns, no shade and no crowd. The bridge section runs from roughly mile 11 to mile 20, rising steadily toward 200 feet over open water and then descending, which asks something completely different from you than the stop-start city miles that come before it.
Do long uninterrupted tempo blocks, eight to ten miles at goal effort with no stops and no traffic lights, so holding concentration that long feels ordinary. Add downhill running through the last six weeks, because you come off the bridge around mile 20 and quads that have never practiced descending will not enjoy the flat finish through Jack London Square. Seek out exposed, windy running too, since there is nothing at all to hide behind out there.
Current mileage, recent longest run, marathon experience, goal, and available days determine which plans rank first. After you choose and subscribe, Stride dates every workout through March 21, 2027.
The 2027 Oakland Marathon is scheduled for March 21, 2027, so the 12-week window opens around December 27, 2026. Treat that as the outside edge of the window, then line week one up with the plan's normal weekly rhythm.
Use this window when your recent training is steady and the opening week will not be a mileage jump. If you are returning after a long break, twelve weeks is too little room to rebuild and peak at the same time. The course does not change the opening load you can handle, so choose from your current mileage and recent longest run before adding race-specific terrain.

Do not double weeks or cram missed mileage into the remaining calendar. Use your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days to choose a plan that can enter at an appropriate point while preserving the taper.
Yes. From roughly mile 11 to mile 20 the course heads out onto the Bay Bridge to Yerba Buena Island and turns around, which is close to nine miles over open water. The course high point is near 200 feet, and the organizer describes the miles coming back off the bridge as downhill.
Moderate on paper, harder in practice. Total climbing is around 764 feet with a high point near 200 feet, which is not much. The difficulty is the shape: ten city miles, then nine exposed bridge miles with a sustained grade each way, then a flat finish on legs that have just spent a long time descending.
Each page counts back from race day, maps the 4 phases to real dates, and applies the window to that course and its typical conditions.
