Weeks 1–2
Jan 17, 2027–Jan 30, 2027
Hold close to your current volume, establish the weekly rhythm, and make sure the opening load is honest.
Knoxville, TNApril 10, 2027
Start around January 16, 2027. The calendar below gives each phase a real date, then the course guidance shows where to make the build specific to Knoxville Marathon.
The Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon starts on the Clinch Avenue Bridge at 7:30 in the morning and finishes in World's Fair Park, and in between it gains roughly 1,250 feet without ever getting more than about 100 feet above its lowest point. That arithmetic tells you what kind of day it is. The hills are small and there are a great many of them.
Use this window when your recent training is steady and the opening week will not be a mileage jump. If you are returning after a long break, twelve weeks is too little room to rebuild and peak at the same time.
These dates define the job of each phase. Your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days still decide the actual workouts inside them.
Weeks 1–2
Jan 17, 2027–Jan 30, 2027
Hold close to your current volume, establish the weekly rhythm, and make sure the opening load is honest.
Weeks 3–7
Jan 31, 2027–Mar 6, 2027
Grow the long run and weekly work with step-back weeks intact. There is no room to repay missed mileage.
Weeks 8–10
Mar 7, 2027–Mar 27, 2027
Complete the most race-specific long runs, rehearse fueling, and practice the terrain that will decide the final 10K.
Weeks 11–12
Mar 28, 2027–Apr 10, 2027
Reduce volume, keep the routine familiar, and arrive on race day without trying to squeeze in one more big week.
Course-specific work starts early in a 12-week build. Put the race's terrain and expected conditions into long runs once the opening weeks feel controlled, without adding extra hard days.
Read the full race guideTrain for the Knoxville Marathon on continuously rolling ground and learn to run by effort, because a course that gains 1,250 feet in small pieces will scramble your splits without ever giving you a hill worth a name. Find a route that undulates for two hours straight and run it without surging up or coasting down.
Then front-load the specificity to match the course. Since the climbing concentrates in the first half, build long runs that put the hilly section inside the first sixty to ninety minutes and then ask you to hold pace on tired legs afterward. That's the exact demand of race day, and it's the reverse of the usual finish-strong-uphill workout.
Add downhill control. On a loop you take back every foot you climb, and the descents arrive when you're already fatigued. Short quick steps, no braking, practiced two or three times in the last six weeks. Quads trained that way still work through the closing miles, which is when the small rollers stop feeling small.
One word on targets. This course has produced Boston qualifying rates between 2.5% and 8.7% over recent years. Set your goal off your training paces adjusted for terrain, not off a flat-course personal best.
Current mileage, recent longest run, marathon experience, goal, and available days determine which plans rank first. After you choose and subscribe, Stride dates every workout through April 10, 2027.
The 2027 Knoxville Marathon is scheduled for April 10, 2027, so the 12-week window opens around January 16, 2027. Treat that as the outside edge of the window, then line week one up with the plan's normal weekly rhythm.
Use this window when your recent training is steady and the opening week will not be a mileage jump. If you are returning after a long break, twelve weeks is too little room to rebuild and peak at the same time. The course does not change the opening load you can handle, so choose from your current mileage and recent longest run before adding race-specific terrain.

Do not double weeks or cram missed mileage into the remaining calendar. Use your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days to choose a plan that can enter at an appropriate point while preserving the taper.
Constantly, but gently. The Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon gains and loses about 1,250 feet inside a roughly 100-foot elevation band, so the hills are small and near-continuous rather than big. The organizers say hills concentrate in the first half, that it isn't terribly hilly, and that very few miles are just flat.
Not especially. Just 2.5% of finishers ran a Boston qualifying time in 2026, 5.6% in 2025 and 8.7% in 2023, which puts it on the slower end for a certified course. The constant rolling costs more than the modest elevation numbers suggest. Pick flatter ground if a qualifier is the goal.
