4-Day Mobile Marathon Training Plan

Mobile, ALJanuary 10, 2027

Four runs per week for 18 weeks: two easy runs, one midweek aerobic run, and one long run. The schedule stays fixed; the guidance below shows how to choose terrain, rehearse conditions, and prepare for the Mobile Marathon course.

The Mobile Marathon finished 114 people in 2026, and 16.7% of them ran a Boston qualifying time. In 2025 the rate was 18.3%. A field that small producing a qualifying share that high tells you two things at once: the course is genuinely fast, and the people who show up are mostly runners who came to race.

The 18-week window opens around September 6, 2026. Weeks one through 17 keep the normal Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday rhythm. Only race week moves so the marathon lands on its actual weekday. If the window has passed, do not skip ahead or cram missed mileage into the time left.

Marathon — 26.2 mi

This free plan is complete, fixed, and ready to use.

It begins at 15 miles per week, peaks at 40, and asks you to manage schedule changes and missed training yourself.

A Stride plan ranks from your running, then dates to race day.

Current mileage, recent longest run, marathon experience, goal, and available days decide which plans rank first.

How to use this plan for Mobile Marathon

The mileage builds your engine. Your long-run route, pacing, fueling, and clothing rehearsals make that fitness specific to this race.

How to train for the Mobile Marathon

Train for the Mobile Marathon by getting very good at holding one pace on flat ground. With 25 feet of elevation range across the whole course, nothing will change your stride for you, and the same muscle fibers carry the same load from the gun to the line. That single skill is what this race tests.

The workout that matters is a long run with a large unbroken goal pace block at the end. Build toward 10 to 14 miles at target pace inside a longer run, on the flattest route you have. Runners who train on hills often arrive at flat races surprised by the cost of the monotony, because they'd been getting small involuntary breaks all along without noticing.

Add lower body strength work through the build, since you'll get no relief from grade change. Then rehearse the double loop honestly: you pass Mardi Gras Park at halfway with the finish line right there and 13.1 miles still to run. Decide well in advance what you're going to think at that moment, because deciding in the moment goes badly.

Finally, plan to run alone. With around 100 finishers there's no pack to sit in and nobody to pull you through mile 22.

Keep the plan honest. This free schedule contains no speedwork. Apply the course guidance through route choice and race rehearsal without turning easy days into extra workouts. If your goal calls for marathon-pace work, compare it with First Marathon Plus.

Match the terrain

Do several Mobile Marathon long runs on uninterrupted flat ground. With few terrain changes to reset your stride, steady pacing and late-run form matter more than hill speed.

Rehearse race morning

Race morning in Mobile typically starts near 42F with humidity around 77%, clear skies and a light northerly, warming to an average high of 57F. That's genuinely cold at the start line for a Gulf Coast race and pleasant by the finish. Run a few long runs in the low 40s so you know exactly what you want on and what you can throw away in the first mile.

Prepare for the hard part

Miles 14 through 20, right after you pass the finish area at Mardi Gras Park and head back out for a second lap with almost nobody around you.

Check the starting line before you commit.

Beginner-friendly does not mean couch-to-marathon. Week one asks for four runs, 15 total miles, and a six-mile long run.

  • Fifteen miles in week one is close to the volume you already handle.
  • You can protect four run days most weeks, including a weekend long run.
  • Your priority is a steady first-marathon build without speedwork.
  • You can start around September 6, 2026 without forcing the early weeks.

Mobile Marathon questions, answered.

When should I start this 18-week Mobile Marathon plan?

The 2027 Mobile Marathon is scheduled for January 10, 2027, so the 18-week window opens around September 6, 2026. Weeks one through 17 keep the normal weekly rhythm and Sunday long run; only the final race week shifts to the event's actual weekday. If that date has already passed, do not compress 18 weeks of mileage into a shorter window.

How should I adapt the four-day plan for the Mobile Marathon course?

Do several Mobile Marathon long runs on uninterrupted flat ground. With few terrain changes to reset your stride, steady pacing and late-run form matter more than hill speed. Train for the Mobile Marathon by getting very good at holding one pace on flat ground. With 25 feet of elevation range across the whole course, nothing will change your stride for you, and the same muscle fibers carry the same load from the gun to the line. That single skill is what this race tests.

Is four days a week enough to train for the Mobile Marathon?

Four run days can be enough when 15 miles in week one is not a sudden jump and you can protect the long run most weeks. This schedule builds to a 40-mile peak and a 20-mile long run. A runner chasing an aggressive time or already supporting more volume may fit a higher-mileage plan better.

Is the Mobile Marathon flat?

Extremely. The Mobile Marathon runs between 8 and 33 feet above sea level with about 199 feet of total climb over 26.2 miles, close to the flattest a road marathon gets. It's a double loop of the half marathon course through downtown Mobile, starting and finishing at Mardi Gras Park.

Is the Mobile Marathon a good Boston qualifier?

On the numbers, yes. About 16.7% of Mobile Marathon finishers ran a Boston qualifying time in 2026, 18.3% did in 2025 and 18% in 2024. The flat profile and cool January mornings help. Bear in mind that a field of roughly 100 runners skews heavily toward people already racing near qualifying pace.
