Does this window fit your starting point?

Use this window when you have a running base and want several weeks before the hardest marathon-specific work begins. The extra month over a 12-week plan creates more room for gradual long-run growth and recovery.

  • You run consistently enough that week one is a continuation, not a restart.
  • You want a distinct foundation phase before the biggest long runs.
  • You can protect your planned run days for roughly four months.
  • Your race date leaves the full window without forcing skipped weeks.

These dates define the job of each phase. Your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days still decide the actual workouts inside them.

Foundation

Weeks 1–4

Jan 3, 2027–Jan 30, 2027

Establish repeatable weeks, keep most running easy, and begin extending the long run without forcing the pace.

Build

Weeks 5–10

Jan 31, 2027–Mar 13, 2027

Increase the weekly load, preserve step-back weeks, and introduce the terrain and effort the race will require.

Peak

Weeks 11–13

Mar 14, 2027–Apr 3, 2027

Complete the biggest race-specific weeks and use long runs to lock in fueling, pacing, and equipment.

Taper

Weeks 14–16

Apr 4, 2027–Apr 24, 2027

Bring volume down while keeping the weekly rhythm familiar. Training is finished before race week begins.

Make the window specific to Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon.

Use the first month to establish consistency, then make long runs progressively more specific to the race's terrain and conditions. The course rehearsal should grow with the plan, not appear all at once in peak week.

How to train for the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon

Train for the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon on flat ground with one deliberate hill loop planted in the middle of your long runs. That is the shape of the race: roughly 500 feet of total climbing, most of it concentrated in Iroquois Park, then flat miles home on legs that have already been worked.

So build long runs that go easy and flat for ninety minutes, climb and descend hard for fifteen to twenty, then hold goal marathon effort on the flat for the final forty. That last block is the thing this course actually tests, and hardly anybody trains it. Running flat when you are fresh is easy. Running flat straight after a climb and a descent is a different skill entirely.

Give the descent its own attention. Coming out of the park you will be running downhill on tired quads with real distance left, and braking there is what leaves you shuffling at mile 22. Practice short, quick steps downhill at goal effort until it stops feeling like a technique and starts feeling ordinary.

Build My Plan

16-week Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon plan questions, answered.

When should I start a 16-week Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon plan?

The 2027 Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon is scheduled for April 24, 2027, so the 16-week window opens around January 2, 2027. Treat that as the outside edge of the window, then line week one up with the plan's normal weekly rhythm.

Is a 16-week plan long enough for the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon?

Use this window when you have a running base and want several weeks before the hardest marathon-specific work begins. The extra month over a 12-week plan creates more room for gradual long-run growth and recovery. The course does not change the opening load you can handle, so choose from your current mileage and recent longest run before adding race-specific terrain.

How should I prepare for the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon course in 16 weeks?

Use the first month to establish consistency, then make long runs progressively more specific to the race's terrain and conditions. The course rehearsal should grow with the plan, not appear all at once in peak week.

What if the 16-week Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon window has already started?

Do not double weeks or cram missed mileage into the remaining calendar. Use your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days to choose a plan that can enter at an appropriate point while preserving the taper.

Is the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon hilly?

Mostly no. The Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon is flat through downtown Louisville and the South End, with about 500 feet of total climbing and roughly 150 feet between its lowest and highest points. Nearly all of that sits in Iroquois Park, which gives you one real climb in an otherwise level race.

Do you run past Churchill Downs in the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon?

Yes. The route passes Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, as part of the South End section that also takes in Southern Parkway and Iroquois Park. The event is run as part of the Kentucky Derby Festival, which is what puts the course on that ground in the first place.
