The whole route spans about 150 feet between its lowest and highest points and totals only around 500 feet of climbing, so the park is not a mountain. For an unprepared runner it is something worse: one sustained climb dropped into the middle of a flat race, at exactly the point where a flat trained runner has settled into a rhythm and stopped paying attention.

The course: flat downtown, one park, and a long way back

The Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon starts at 7:00 a.m. on Main Street near Louisville Slugger Field and finishes about a mile away at Preston and Witherspoon near the waterfront. In between it covers downtown, the Old Louisville historic neighborhood, parts of the Olmsted park system, Churchill Downs, Southern Parkway and Iroquois Park.

Southern Parkway is the connective tissue between downtown and the park: long, straight, tree lined, with nothing in the terrain to interrupt your pace. Then the road tips up into Iroquois Park, and for the first time all morning your effort and your pace stop matching.

The way back downtown is where the race gets decided. The climb is behind you, your quads have absorbed a descent out of the park, and you have several flat miles to run on legs that just did something they had not done all day. Six medical aid stations cover the route, along with water and Powerade stops throughout.

How to train for the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon

Train for the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon on flat ground with one deliberate hill loop planted in the middle of your long runs. That is the shape of the race: roughly 500 feet of total climbing, most of it concentrated in Iroquois Park, then flat miles home on legs that have already been worked.

So build long runs that go easy and flat for ninety minutes, climb and descend hard for fifteen to twenty, then hold goal marathon effort on the flat for the final forty. That last block is the thing this course actually tests, and hardly anybody trains it. Running flat when you are fresh is easy. Running flat straight after a climb and a descent is a different skill entirely.

Give the descent its own attention. Coming out of the park you will be running downhill on tired quads with real distance left, and braking there is what leaves you shuffling at mile 22. Practice short, quick steps downhill at goal effort until it stops feeling like a technique and starts feeling ordinary.

Getting in

Registration runs through RunSignUp and the marathon does not sell out quickly, though it has grown every year: 1,502 finishers in 2026 against 1,004 in 2022. The one hard gate is the pace rule. Walkers are not permitted to register for the full marathon, because the 6 hour limit is enforced and the course reopens behind you as you go.

Where does the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon get hard?

Iroquois Park in the middle of the race, and then the flat miles back downtown afterward, where the bill for the climb and the descent actually comes due.

What is the weather like at the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon?

Late April in Louisville usually means a start near 56F with humidity around 75% under overcast skies, warming to an average high near 70F. That is decent racing weather with a warm finish for anyone past four hours. The bigger risk is variance, because an Ohio Valley spring can hand you cold rain or 80 degrees, so train in both and pack for both.

Is the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon a good Boston qualifier?

The course is USATF certified and Boston eligible, and it qualifies a respectable share of its field: 5.1% of finishers in 2026, 7.4% in 2025 and 8.1% in 2023. That makes it a reasonable qualifying race. Iroquois Park costs you a few minutes and the long flat sections hand some of it back.

Is the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon a good first marathon?

Be careful here. The 6 hour limit works out to about 13:45 per mile, the race does not let walkers register for the marathon, and it warns that course services stop past that pace. If you are confident of finishing inside six hours, the mid-size field and the flat majority make this a friendly first marathon. If you are not confident, choose a race with a longer limit.

Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon questions, answered.

Is the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon hilly?

Mostly no. The Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon is flat through downtown Louisville and the South End, with about 500 feet of total climbing and roughly 150 feet between its lowest and highest points. Nearly all of that sits in Iroquois Park, which gives you one real climb in an otherwise level race.

Do you run past Churchill Downs in the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon?

Yes. The route passes Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, as part of the South End section that also takes in Southern Parkway and Iroquois Park. The event is run as part of the Kentucky Derby Festival, which is what puts the course on that ground in the first place.

What is the time limit for the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon?

Six hours, which is about 13:45 per mile. The race states that course services will not be available beyond that pace and that runners off pace may be rerouted. Walkers are not permitted to register for the marathon distance at all. Build your training around finishing comfortably inside six hours.

Is the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon a good Boston qualifier?

It is a solid one. 5.1% of finishers ran a Boston qualifying time in 2026, 7.4% did in 2025 and 8.1% in 2023, on a USATF certified and Boston eligible course. The flat majority works in your favor, and Iroquois Park is the only section likely to cost you meaningful time.
