OC Marathon training plan: course, start dates, and plan options

Costa Mesa, CAMay 2, 2027

The OC Marathon goes off at 5:30 a.m., before sunrise, and there is a hard rule attached to it: runners who have not reached mile 12 by 9 a.m. get diverted onto the shorter course. That is the honest framing of this race. It is a fast, mostly flat point-to-point run down the coast, but the roads have to reopen and the clock is part of the deal.

The field reached about 3,563 marathon finishers in 2026, up from 1,429 in 2022.

The course: three hills on a net-downhill point to point

The OC Marathon is net downhill by about 122 feet, but three climbs interrupt it. The first comes between miles 6.5 and 7, rising from around 15 feet to 75 feet. The second hits at mile 11. The third is a 55-foot rise at mile 14.5, where the course crosses the 405 freeway overpass.

None of those are big climbs in absolute terms, which is exactly why runners mishandle them. On a course this flat, a 60-foot rise at mile 7 arrives while you are fresh and running above goal pace, and the mile 14.5 overpass arrives when you are neither. Take the first two on effort rather than pace, and treat the overpass as the point where the race actually begins.

How to train for the OC Marathon

Training for the OC Marathon is a pacing problem more than a strength problem. A mostly flat, net-downhill course punishes anyone who has only trained a single pace, because nothing in the terrain forces you to slow down early. You need goal pace to be automatic, and you need three short hills to leave it intact.

In practice: run long runs at goal pace on flat ground until the pace feels boring, then drop three short hill efforts into the middle of them so a rise at mile 7 does not spike your heart rate. Do a few sessions starting at 5:30 a.m. in the dark, fully fueled, because a pre-dawn start rearranges your whole morning routine. And run some easy miles on the flattest, most repetitive surface you can find, since unvarying terrain is its own kind of hard on tired legs.

Getting in

Registration is first-come through RunSignUp with no lottery and no qualifying standard, and prices step up as race day approaches. Two logistics matter more than the sign-up itself. A 5:30 a.m. gun means an alarm around 3:30 if you are staying inland, and a point-to-point layout means your start and your finish sit miles apart, so sort out parking and shuttles when you register rather than the week of the race.

Where does the OC Marathon get hard?

Mile 14.5, where the course climbs 55 feet over the 405 overpass, is where a flat-course pace plan usually starts to come apart.

What is the weather like at the OC Marathon?

Race morning at the OC Marathon is usually mild and damp: around 57 degrees at the 5:30 a.m. start, roughly 87 percent humidity, and overcast skies from the coastal marine layer, warming toward a high near 70. The humidity is the part to train for. Do long runs in humid conditions and start your fluid plan early, because the marine layer hides how much you are actually sweating.

Is the OC Marathon a good Boston qualifier?

OC is a certified Boston qualifier, but the qualifying share has been falling: about 3.6 percent of finishers ran qualifying times in 2026, down from 7.8 percent in 2022 while the field roughly doubled. That drop reflects who is showing up rather than the course getting harder. The profile itself is friendly to a fast time if you pace it properly.

Is the OC Marathon a good first marathon?

OC is a good first marathon with one caveat. The course is mostly flat, the coastline holds your attention, and there is a seven-hour limit with a pacer carrying balloons at a 16-minute mile. The caveat is the 9 a.m. checkpoint at mile 12. A first-timer walking long portions can miss it, so plan your first half honestly.

OC Marathon questions, answered.

Is the OC Marathon flat?

Mostly. The OC Marathon is net downhill by about 122 feet with a low point near sea level, but it includes three climbs: one between miles 6.5 and 7, one at mile 11, and a 55-foot rise at mile 14.5 crossing the 405 freeway overpass. None of them are long.

What is the time limit for the OC Marathon?

Seven hours, about a 16-minute mile, with a pacer carrying balloons holding exactly that pace. There is also an intermediate checkpoint: runners who have not reached mile 12 by 9 a.m. are moved onto the shorter course. Support vehicles at water stations pick up anyone who cannot continue.

Why does the OC Marathon start so early?

The marathon goes off at 5:30 a.m., before sunrise. The practical effect matters more than the reason: you run your first hour in the dark under the coastal marine layer, and the mile 12 checkpoint at 9 a.m. follows from it. Practice pre-dawn fueling and a dark-hours warmup before race day.

Is the OC Marathon a good Boston qualifier?

The course helps, the field average does not. About 3.6 percent of OC Marathon finishers ran Boston qualifying times in 2026, down from 7.8 percent in 2022 as the field roughly doubled. A net-downhill profile and cool coastal mornings suit a fast time if you are fit and pace it correctly.
