Tacoma City Marathon training plan: course, start dates, and plan options

Tacoma, WAMay 2, 2027

The Tacoma City Marathon starts at Tacoma Narrows Airport and finishes at Dune Peninsula Park, and it is really two races bolted together. The first half does all the climbing, roughly 864 feet of it, through the north end of the city and Point Defiance Park. Then at mile 12.5 you cross the Wilson Way Bridge and drop half a mile to sea level.

After that the course is flat. The second half runs the waterfront out to a turnaround along the Thea Foss Waterway and back, on legs that have just absorbed a steep descent. That sequencing, hills first and a pancake second half, is the thing your training has to solve.

The course: 864 feet of climbing, then a half mile drop, then 13 flat miles

The Tacoma City Marathon is a point to point course running from 411 feet at its highest to 9 feet at its lowest, with about 864 feet of gain and 1,126 feet of loss, for a net drop of 262 feet. Almost all of that shape is loaded into the first half. You climb through the north end, run through Point Defiance Park and its old growth forest, then hit the descent.

The organizer calls the Wilson Way Bridge crossing at mile 12.5 a sweet half mile downhill to Puget Sound and Dune Peninsula Park, which it is, and which is also where your race is quietly decided. A half mile of steep descent at the exact midpoint of a marathon does more damage than the same drop at mile 3, because it lands on legs that are already 90 minutes in.

From there the course is what the race describes as flat and fast waterfront, with Mount Rainier and the Sound on your right, running out along Ruston Way to a turnaround by the Thea Foss Waterway Esplanade and the Museum of Glass, then back to the finish at Dune Peninsula Park. Because it is an out and back, you pass the same aid twice: station six at Reconciliation Park covers miles 16.2 and 22.4, and station five near the Water Walk covers miles 13.6 and 25.4.

Aid comes at miles 3.5 (North Skyline Drive), 6.7 (Vassault Park), 9.1 (Wilderness Cutoff Road) and 12.5 (Wilson Way Bridge) on the way out, with a long station spanning roughly miles 18.6 to 20.1 near the Fish Peddler.

How to train for the Tacoma City Marathon

Train for the Tacoma City Marathon by making eccentric quad strength the priority, because the half mile descent off the Wilson Way Bridge at mile 12.5 arrives right before 13 miles of flat road where damaged quads have nowhere to hide. Downhill repeats are the specific work: run four to six efforts of two to four minutes down a moderate grade at marathon effort, once a week from about ten weeks out.

Build long runs that copy the shape of the day. Climb for the first half, take a hard descent in the middle, then hold goal pace on flat ground for the last hour. That last piece is where the race is won, and it is the part almost nobody rehearses. If you only train hills, you arrive at mile 14 with fresh legs and no ability to hold one rhythm. If you only train flat, the first half spends you.

Practice the descent itself rather than just surviving it. Quick, short, high cadence steps with the foot landing under you, not out in front. Braking down that bridge feels controlled and costs you the last 10K.

Then pace the front half conservatively. With 864 feet of climbing before you even reach the bridge, the temptation is to bank time on the drop. Take the descent at even effort instead and let it be free speed, and you will still have the waterfront left.

Getting in

Getting in is easy and staying in is not. The race finished 422 marathoners in 2026, 402 in 2025 and 391 in 2024, so it does not sell out, but there are no refunds, no transfers and no rollovers to another year. Registration opens with a two day special price and then steps up steadily through race day. Solve the point to point logistics early, since the start at Tacoma Narrows Airport and the finish at Dune Peninsula Park are nowhere near each other.

Where does the Tacoma City Marathon get hard?

Miles 20 to 25 on the flat Ruston Way waterfront, where nothing about the grade changes and your quads have already taken the half mile Wilson Way descent at mile 12.5.

What is the weather like at the Tacoma City Marathon?

Race morning in Tacoma usually starts near 50F with humidity around 80%, clear skies and a light southerly, and the day averages a high of only 58F. That is close to perfect marathon weather, so it will not be conditions that slow you down. The one practical detail is the start: you will be standing at an airfield at 7:30 a.m., so bring a throwaway layer you are happy to lose.

Is the Tacoma City Marathon a good Boston qualifier?

The Tacoma City Marathon is a USATF certified, Boston eligible course, but the qualifying rate is modest: 3.1% of finishers ran a qualifying time in 2026, down from 4.7% in 2025 and 5.2% in 2023. The 262 foot net drop is small enough that it does not attract a downhill adjustment, and it does not make the course fast either, because the climbing comes first and the drop is concentrated in one steep half mile.

Is the Tacoma City Marathon a good first marathon?

It is a manageable first marathon if you are ready for hills. The six hour limit is standard, and the race offers an early start an hour before the gun with a seven hour limit, which is genuinely helpful for a first timer who expects to be out a while. The risk is that the front half climbs hard, and hills make even pacing difficult when you have never raced the distance.

Tacoma City Marathon questions, answered.

Is the Tacoma City Marathon hilly?

The first half is. The Tacoma City Marathon climbs about 864 feet before mile 13, topping out around 411 feet, then drops to near sea level and stays flat for the rest of the way. Net drop for the whole course is 262 feet. Train hills for the first half and sustained flat pace for the second.

What is the Wilson Way Bridge downhill?

It is a half mile descent at about mile 12.5 that takes runners from the Point Defiance side down to Puget Sound, and the race itself calls it a sweet half mile downhill. It arrives at the midpoint, so it hits legs that are already tired and sets up the flat second half. Train downhill running specifically.

Is the Tacoma City Marathon a good Boston qualifier?

It is a certified qualifier but not an easy one. 3.1% of finishers ran a qualifying time in 2026, down from 4.7% in 2025 and 5.2% in 2023. The 262 foot net drop does not make it fast, because the course climbs 864 feet in the first half before giving any of it back.

What is the time limit for the Tacoma City Marathon?

Six hours, about 13:44 per mile, from the 7:30 a.m. start at Tacoma Narrows Airport. Runners who need longer can request an early start an hour before the gun, which extends the limit to seven hours. Early starters who finish under five hours are not eligible for awards.

Where does the Tacoma City Marathon get hard?

Miles 20 to 25 on the flat Ruston Way waterfront, where nothing about the grade changes and your quads have already taken the half mile Wilson Way descent at mile 12.5.
