Florida Marathon training plan: course, start dates, and plan options

Melbourne, FLFebruary 7, 2027

The Florida Marathon in Melbourne is built out of four five mile straightaways along the Indian River, which is the organizers' own description of the course and also a fair warning. You start at 6:00 a.m. on Front Street, cross causeways, and spend most of the morning running in a straight line with open water on one side.

The course tops out at 70 feet above sea level and bottoms out at 2, so there is nothing to break the rhythm. That sounds like a gift and it half is. Flat means fast until it means the same stride and the same view for four hours, in 89% humidity, while the sun comes up over the water.

The course: causeways, straightaways, and no hills at all

The Florida Marathon starts at Front Street and East New Haven Avenue in downtown Melbourne and finishes just past a crossing of the Melbourne Causeway. The route follows Riverview Drive, US-1, Indian River Drive and Riverside Drive, with a turnaround around mile 4 inside Ballard Park and a crossing of the Eau Gallie Causeway near mile 7.

The only grade changes on the whole course are causeway ramps. That is a minor thing at mile 7 and a genuine event on the closing crossing, when a bridge you barely noticed in the dark becomes the last climb of your day. Sixteen aid stations cover the route, with medical support at the Eau Gallie Causeway around mile 7.2, again at mile 14.5, and at the finish.

Wind is the variable nobody plans for. Long straight roads beside open water and two causeway crossings mean there is no shelter anywhere, and whichever way the breeze is running that morning, you will be pointed into it for a five mile block at some stage.

How to train for the Florida Marathon

Train for the Florida Marathon by rehearsing heat, humidity and long uninterrupted stretches, not hills. The course is essentially flat, so what limits your day is thermal and mental. Run long in the warmest, stickiest part of your week, and practice holding one honest pace over very long straight sections.

Flat courses fail people in a specific way. With no grade changes, your stride never varies, so the same tissue takes the same load ten thousand times in a row. Build in strength work for calves and hips, and do at least two long runs on a completely flat, straight route so you find out early where your form starts to come apart.

Then train the wind. Run the back half of a long run into a headwind rather than with it, and get used to how much slower goal effort reads when you are pushing air. Practice drinking on the move too. A 6:00 a.m. start with humidity near 89% means you are sweating before the sun is properly up.

Getting in

Getting a spot is easy. The marathon finished 328 runners in 2025 and 221 in 2024, so it does not sell out, and the race allows walk-up registration at Saturday packet pickup. What it does not allow is walkers in the marathon distance, so enter only if you can run it inside the 7 hour limit. Melbourne in early February is a pleasant place to be, so book a room before you book anything else.

Where does the Florida Marathon get hard?

Miles 18 to 24 on the exposed straightaways beside the water, when the sun is well up, the humidity has not moved, and the road ahead of you does not change for five miles at a time.

What is the weather like at the Florida Marathon?

Race morning in Melbourne typically starts around 61F with humidity near 89% under mostly cloudy skies, and February averages a high of 72F. The race itself tells runners to expect a rise from about 60 degrees at 6 a.m. into the 80s by midday, which is warmer than the monthly norm, so anyone out past four and a half hours may be finishing in real heat. Do your long runs in the warm part of the day, not the cool part.

Is the Florida Marathon a good Boston qualifier?

The course is Boston eligible and the organizers pitch it as one of Florida's top qualifying races, but the recent record is modest. 3.1% of finishers ran a qualifying time in 2025, down from 8.6% in 2022. Terrain is not what slows people here. Humidity and a fast warming morning are.

Is the Florida Marathon a good first marathon?

It suits a first marathon in one way and not in another. The 7 hour limit is generous and there is not a hill on the course. But the race does not permit walkers to register for the marathon distance, and a warm humid morning is a hard place to learn pacing for the first time. Go in trained for heat, not just for the distance.

Florida Marathon questions, answered.

Is the Florida Marathon flat?

Almost completely. The Florida Marathon runs between 2 and 70 feet above sea level with roughly 418 feet of climbing across the entire distance, and the only grade changes are the causeway ramps over the Indian River. The difficulty is not the terrain. It is humidity, sun and four five mile straightaways with nothing to break them up.

How windy is the Florida Marathon?

Wind is a real factor. The course runs beside open water along Indian River Drive and Riverside Drive and crosses two causeways, so there is no shelter on the route. A February morning in Melbourne often carries a steady breeze, and on a course built from long straightaways you will run into it for unbroken stretches.

Is the Florida Marathon a good Boston qualifier?

It is Boston eligible and flat, which helps, but the qualifying rate has been low recently: 3.1% of finishers in 2025 against 8.6% in 2022. Heat and humidity, rather than the course, are what cost people time here. If you handle warm weather well, the terrain will not stand in your way.

What time does the Florida Marathon start and what is the cutoff?

The marathon starts at 6:00 a.m. and runners get 7 hours to finish. There is an intermediate checkpoint too: anyone who has not reached Riverside Drive and SR-192 about five hours and forty minutes in receives a police escort to complete the final miles on the causeway paths.
