Rolling terrain in north Florida in February creates a pairing that catches visitors out every year. Race mornings have started near 46F with 88 percent humidity, and the day averages a 66F high. So the air is heavy from the gun and the temperature keeps climbing while you are still out there running.

The course: canopy oaks, two campuses, and real rollers
The Tallahassee Marathon runs a mostly loop course through what the organizers call the beautiful neighborhoods with the big oaks and hanging moss, taking in both the Florida State and Florida A&M campuses, and finishes on Madison Street where finishers' names are announced. It covers about 662 feet of climbing between roughly 32 and 228 feet.
The rolling is what visitors get wrong. North Florida is not the flat peninsula, and 662 feet of gain across 26.2 miles puts this closer to a mid-Atlantic rolling course than to a coastal flat one. None of it is steep, which is exactly why it accumulates on you without ever announcing itself.
The race has grown fast: 152 finishers in 2022, 296 in 2025 and 379 in 2026. It is still small enough that you will run stretches alone, and the organizers describe good crowd support for a smaller city race, concentrated where the route passes the campuses.
How to train for the Tallahassee Marathon
Train for Tallahassee on rolling terrain and in humid air, which is an unusual pairing to prepare for in February. About 662 feet of climbing arrives in continuous small rollers, and race morning humidity has run near 88 percent. A winter block on flat, cold, dry roads prepares you for neither one of those.
For the terrain: run your long efforts on continuously undulating routes and pace by effort rather than by split. The rollers here never demand a gear change, which is precisely why runners hold pace over them and quietly spend more than they planned. Learn what steady breathing feels like while your mile splits swing 15 seconds in both directions.
For the air: this is the harder problem if you train somewhere with a real winter. You cannot manufacture 88 percent humidity in January in Ohio, but you can approximate the effect. Overdress for a few long runs, put some efforts indoors at a warm setting, and above all open conservatively, because humid air makes a given pace cost more from the first mile.
Then plan for the temperature climb. A 46F start against a 66F average high means the last hour is a different race from the first. Practice taking fluid on a schedule rather than waiting until you feel like you need it, because on this course the moment you feel like you need it is already late.
Getting in
Registration for the Tallahassee Marathon runs through the race's own site alongside a shorter distance and a marathon relay. The race has grown from 152 finishers in 2022 to 379 in 2026 and does not sell out, so entering is straightforward, though prices step up on a published schedule as race weekend approaches. The marathon starts at 7:30 a.m. EST. The organizers do not publish a course time limit on their main pages, so ask them directly if you expect to need a wide finishing window.
Where does the Tallahassee Marathon get hard?
Roughly mile 20 onward, where 662 feet of accumulated rollers and a temperature that has been climbing since the 7:30 a.m. start arrive at the same time.
What is the weather like at the Tallahassee Marathon?
Early February race mornings in Tallahassee have started near 46F with 88 percent humidity, overcast skies and almost no wind, while the day averages a 66F high and a 41F low. That is a cool start and a genuinely warm finish for anyone out past four hours. Train to drink on a schedule rather than by thirst, and set your opening pace assuming the second half will be warmer than the first.
Is the Tallahassee Marathon a good Boston qualifier?
The Tallahassee Marathon is a USATF certified Boston qualifying course and the BAA's net downhill adjustment does not apply to it, so a time here counts exactly as run. The qualifying rate has slipped as the race has grown: 14.5 percent of finishers qualified in 2022, 11.4 percent in 2024 and 5 percent in 2026, over a span where the field went from 152 finishers to 379.
Is the Tallahassee Marathon a good first marathon?
It is a friendly first marathon in most respects: a small club-run race, a 7:30 a.m. start, campus crowds and a finish where your name gets called on Madison Street. Two things to plan for are the rollers, which make even pacing harder than a flat course does, and the humidity, which will make your opening miles feel easier than they actually are.
Tallahassee Marathon questions, answered.
Is the Tallahassee Marathon hilly? Isn't Florida flat?
North Florida is not flat, and the Tallahassee Marathon proves it. The course covers about 662 feet of climbing between roughly 32 and 228 feet, rolling continuously through neighborhoods of live oaks and across two university campuses. Nothing is steep enough to walk, which is why the cost accumulates on runners who trained on flat ground.
What is the weather like at the Tallahassee Marathon in February?
Cool at the start and warm at the finish. Race mornings have begun near 46F with 88 percent humidity under overcast skies, while early February in Tallahassee averages a 66F high and a 41F low. Anyone running longer than about four hours should expect the last hour to be considerably warmer than the first.
Is the Tallahassee Marathon a good Boston qualifier?
It is certified and Boston eligible, but the numbers have softened. 5 percent of finishers ran a qualifying time in 2026, down from 11.4 percent in 2024 and 14.5 percent in 2022, over a period when the field more than doubled. Between the rollers and the humidity, this is not the course for a narrow qualifying margin.
Does the Tallahassee Marathon go through the FSU campus?
Yes. The organizers list both the Florida State and Florida A&M campuses on the marathon route, along with residential streets of big oaks and hanging moss, and the race finishes on Madison Street with finishers' names announced. The Gulf Winds Track Club has run the event since 1975, when two people entered the first edition.
