Weeks 1–4
Oct 19, 2026–Nov 15, 2026
Establish repeatable weeks, keep most running easy, and begin extending the long run without forcing the pace.
Melbourne, FLFebruary 7, 2027
Start around October 18, 2026. The calendar below gives each phase a real date, then the course guidance shows where to make the build specific to Florida Marathon.
The Florida Marathon in Melbourne is built out of four five mile straightaways along the Indian River, which is the organizers' own description of the course and also a fair warning. You start at 6:00 a.m. on Front Street, cross causeways, and spend most of the morning running in a straight line with open water on one side.
Use this window when you have a running base and want several weeks before the hardest marathon-specific work begins. The extra month over a 12-week plan creates more room for gradual long-run growth and recovery.
These dates define the job of each phase. Your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days still decide the actual workouts inside them.

Weeks 5–10
Nov 16, 2026–Dec 27, 2026
Increase the weekly load, preserve step-back weeks, and introduce the terrain and effort the race will require.
Weeks 11–13
Dec 28, 2026–Jan 17, 2027
Complete the biggest race-specific weeks and use long runs to lock in fueling, pacing, and equipment.
Weeks 14–16
Jan 18, 2027–Feb 7, 2027
Bring volume down while keeping the weekly rhythm familiar. Training is finished before race week begins.
Use the first month to establish consistency, then make long runs progressively more specific to the race's terrain and conditions. The course rehearsal should grow with the plan, not appear all at once in peak week.
Read the full race guideTrain for the Florida Marathon by rehearsing heat, humidity and long uninterrupted stretches, not hills. The course is essentially flat, so what limits your day is thermal and mental. Run long in the warmest, stickiest part of your week, and practice holding one honest pace over very long straight sections.
Flat courses fail people in a specific way. With no grade changes, your stride never varies, so the same tissue takes the same load ten thousand times in a row. Build in strength work for calves and hips, and do at least two long runs on a completely flat, straight route so you find out early where your form starts to come apart.
Then train the wind. Run the back half of a long run into a headwind rather than with it, and get used to how much slower goal effort reads when you are pushing air. Practice drinking on the move too. A 6:00 a.m. start with humidity near 89% means you are sweating before the sun is properly up.
Current mileage, recent longest run, marathon experience, goal, and available days determine which plans rank first. After you choose and subscribe, Stride dates every workout through February 7, 2027.
The 2027 Florida Marathon is scheduled for February 7, 2027, so the 16-week window opens around October 18, 2026. Treat that as the outside edge of the window, then line week one up with the plan's normal weekly rhythm.
Use this window when you have a running base and want several weeks before the hardest marathon-specific work begins. The extra month over a 12-week plan creates more room for gradual long-run growth and recovery. The course does not change the opening load you can handle, so choose from your current mileage and recent longest run before adding race-specific terrain.

Do not double weeks or cram missed mileage into the remaining calendar. Use your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days to choose a plan that can enter at an appropriate point while preserving the taper.
Almost completely. The Florida Marathon runs between 2 and 70 feet above sea level with roughly 418 feet of climbing across the entire distance, and the only grade changes are the causeway ramps over the Indian River. The difficulty is not the terrain. It is humidity, sun and four five mile straightaways with nothing to break them up.
Wind is a real factor. The course runs beside open water along Indian River Drive and Riverside Drive and crosses two causeways, so there is no shelter on the route. A February morning in Melbourne often carries a steady breeze, and on a course built from long straightaways you will run into it for unbroken stretches.
Each page counts back from race day, maps the 4 phases to real dates, and applies the window to that course and its typical conditions.
