Weeks 1–4
Dec 27, 2026–Jan 23, 2027
Establish repeatable weeks, keep most running easy, and begin extending the long run without forcing the pace.
Carmel, INApril 17, 2027
Start around December 26, 2026. The calendar below gives each phase a real date, then the course guidance shows where to make the build specific to Carmel Marathon.
The Carmel Marathon starts north of the Palladium on City Center Drive at 8:10 a.m., runs two laps of Hamilton County, and brings you back past the finish line at the halfway point before turning you out for a second time around. 687 runners finished the marathon in 2026. It is a small race with a fast reputation, and 17.2% of that 2026 field ran a Boston qualifying time.
Use this window when you have a running base and want several weeks before the hardest marathon-specific work begins. The extra month over a 12-week plan creates more room for gradual long-run growth and recovery.
These dates define the job of each phase. Your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days still decide the actual workouts inside them.
Weeks 1–4
Dec 27, 2026–Jan 23, 2027
Establish repeatable weeks, keep most running easy, and begin extending the long run without forcing the pace.
Weeks 5–10
Jan 24, 2027–Mar 6, 2027
Increase the weekly load, preserve step-back weeks, and introduce the terrain and effort the race will require.
Weeks 11–13
Mar 7, 2027–Mar 27, 2027
Complete the biggest race-specific weeks and use long runs to lock in fueling, pacing, and equipment.
Weeks 14–16
Mar 28, 2027–Apr 17, 2027
Bring volume down while keeping the weekly rhythm familiar. Training is finished before race week begins.
Use the first month to establish consistency, then make long runs progressively more specific to the race's terrain and conditions. The course rehearsal should grow with the plan, not appear all at once in peak week.
Read the full race guideTrain for the Carmel Marathon as a negative split race on shallow rolling ground. The 464 feet of climb comes in small pieces, so the productive session is a long run on gently undulating road held at one locked effort, letting your per-mile pace drift 15 or 20 seconds in each direction without chasing it back. Runners who race the small rises here spend the second lap paying for it.
Then rehearse the halfway moment on purpose. Build two or three long runs that pass your car, your house, or your finish point at the midpoint and keep going for another hour at goal effort. It sounds like a gimmick. It is not. Turning away from a finish line while you still have 13 miles left is a specific skill, and the first time you do it should not be on race day.
Practice your fueling to a real clock, because Carmel gives you the aid stations to execute a plan precisely. Pick a gel interval, know which mile markers you will take fluid at, and drill it in training with lemon lime Gatorade or with whatever you intend to carry instead. And do at least a couple of long runs solo at goal effort. With under 700 marathon finishers, the second lap gets quiet.
Current mileage, recent longest run, marathon experience, goal, and available days determine which plans rank first. After you choose and subscribe, Stride dates every workout through April 17, 2027.
The 2027 Carmel Marathon is scheduled for April 17, 2027, so the 16-week window opens around December 26, 2026. Treat that as the outside edge of the window, then line week one up with the plan's normal weekly rhythm.
Use this window when you have a running base and want several weeks before the hardest marathon-specific work begins. The extra month over a 12-week plan creates more room for gradual long-run growth and recovery. The course does not change the opening load you can handle, so choose from your current mileage and recent longest run before adding race-specific terrain.

Do not double weeks or cram missed mileage into the remaining calendar. Use your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days to choose a plan that can enter at an appropriate point while preserving the taper.
Yes. Carmel is certified and consistently produces qualifiers: 17.2% of finishers ran a Boston qualifying time in 2026, and the rate was 21% in 2024 and 22% in 2023. The course has no net elevation drop, so no downhill adjustment applies to times run there. It is a legitimate spring qualifier.
Not very, but it is not pancake flat either. The course spans only about 140 vertical feet, between roughly 740 and 880, while accumulating around 464 feet of total climb. That means many small rises rather than any real hill. The organizers describe it as flat to rolling with a few hills, which matches the numbers.
Each page counts back from race day, maps the 4 phases to real dates, and applies the window to that course and its typical conditions.
