Weeks 1–2
Aug 1, 2027–Aug 14, 2027
Hold close to your current volume, establish the weekly rhythm, and make sure the opening load is honest.
Mankato, MNOctober 23, 2027
Start around July 31, 2027. The calendar below gives each phase a real date, then the course guidance shows where to make the build specific to Mankato Marathon.
The Mankato Marathon starts up on the Minnesota State campus and finishes about 200 feet lower, down in the river valley in City Center Mankato. That's a net drop of 207 feet, but the honest number is the other pair: 790 feet of descent against 583 feet of climb.
Use this window when your recent training is steady and the opening week will not be a mileage jump. If you are returning after a long break, twelve weeks is too little room to rebuild and peak at the same time.
These dates define the job of each phase. Your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days still decide the actual workouts inside them.

Hold close to your current volume, establish the weekly rhythm, and make sure the opening load is honest.
Weeks 3–7
Aug 15, 2027–Sep 18, 2027
Grow the long run and weekly work with step-back weeks intact. There is no room to repay missed mileage.
Weeks 8–10
Sep 19, 2027–Oct 9, 2027
Complete the most race-specific long runs, rehearse fueling, and practice the terrain that will decide the final 10K.
Weeks 11–12
Oct 10, 2027–Oct 23, 2027
Reduce volume, keep the routine familiar, and arrive on race day without trying to squeeze in one more big week.
Course-specific work starts early in a 12-week build. Put the race's terrain and expected conditions into long runs once the opening weeks feel controlled, without adding extra hard days.
Read the full race guideMankato asks for two things a standard flat course plan skips. Train downhill running control, because you'll take 790 feet of descent and the temptation on a course billed as faster and flatter is to let the early descending buy you a cushion. Train it with short, quick strides rather than braking.
Then keep climbing in your legs. 583 feet of ascent isn't much on paper, but it's distributed across a race where you've already been running downhill, and descent leaves quads less able to absorb a climb. Include rolling long runs, and finish a few of them with a rise in the last two miles.
And rehearse running alone. A 381 finisher field spreads out fast. Do at least three long runs at goal effort with no company and no group, so race day isn't the first time you've had to generate your own pace.
Current mileage, recent longest run, marathon experience, goal, and available days determine which plans rank first. After you choose and subscribe, Stride dates every workout through October 23, 2027.
The 2027 Mankato Marathon is scheduled for October 23, 2027, so the 12-week window opens around July 31, 2027. Treat that as the outside edge of the window, then line week one up with the plan's normal weekly rhythm.
Use this window when your recent training is steady and the opening week will not be a mileage jump. If you are returning after a long break, twelve weeks is too little room to rebuild and peak at the same time. The course does not change the opening load you can handle, so choose from your current mileage and recent longest run before adding race-specific terrain.

Do not double weeks or cram missed mileage into the remaining calendar. Use your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days to choose a plan that can enter at an appropriate point while preserving the taper.
Net, yes, by 207 feet, from the Minnesota State campus down to City Center Mankato in the river valley. But the course also includes 583 feet of climbing alongside its 790 feet of descent, so it doesn't run like a downhill race. Train both directions, not just the drop.
Cold. A typical race morning is around 44F with 77% humidity, and the day averages a high of 53F and a low of 36F. That's close to perfect for running a marathon and unpleasant for waiting in the corral at 7:20 a.m. Bring throwaway layers and gloves you don't mind losing.
Each page counts back from race day, maps the 4 phases to real dates, and applies the window to that course and its typical conditions.
