Mankato Marathon training plan: course, start dates, and plan options

Mankato, MNOctober 23, 2027

The Mankato Marathon starts up on the Minnesota State campus and finishes about 200 feet lower, down in the river valley in City Center Mankato. That's a net drop of 207 feet, but the honest number is the other pair: 790 feet of descent against 583 feet of climb.

So don't read this as a downhill course. It hands you a lot of descending and then takes most of it back, which is the profile that fools people. Runners see 'net drop' and 'mostly flat' and race the first half like the terrain is free. The 583 feet arrive anyway.

The course: off the campus high ground and down into the valley

The Mankato Marathon starts at 7:20 a.m. at 101 Joseph Path on the Minnesota State University campus and finishes in City Center Mankato, down in the Minnesota River valley. The course was redesigned for 2026, and the organizers describe the new route as scenic, faster and flatter. It's USATF certified and can be used to qualify for Boston.

Elevation runs from 776 feet at the low point to 1,008 at the high point, which matches the geography: the university sits up on the high ground and downtown sits by the river. Official timing is kept for 6 hours and 15 minutes.

With 381 finishers in 2025 this is a small race. Packet pickup is quick and parking is easy, and you should plan to run long stretches of the course with nobody near you.

How to train for the Mankato Marathon

Mankato asks for two things a standard flat course plan skips. Train downhill running control, because you'll take 790 feet of descent and the temptation on a course billed as faster and flatter is to let the early descending buy you a cushion. Train it with short, quick strides rather than braking.

Then keep climbing in your legs. 583 feet of ascent isn't much on paper, but it's distributed across a race where you've already been running downhill, and descent leaves quads less able to absorb a climb. Include rolling long runs, and finish a few of them with a rise in the last two miles.

And rehearse running alone. A 381 finisher field spreads out fast. Do at least three long runs at goal effort with no company and no group, so race day isn't the first time you've had to generate your own pace.

Getting in

Getting in is easy. The marathon has drawn between 236 and 556 finishers over the past five years, so registration isn't competitive and it opens on the race's own site well ahead of the October date. Worth confirming before you book travel: the course was redesigned for 2026, so start and finish logistics may not match older race reports you find online.

Where does the Mankato Marathon get hard?

After mile 20, where the 583 feet of climbing you barely noticed while you were dropping 790 finally shows up in quads that have been absorbing descent all morning.

What is the weather like at the Mankato Marathon?

Late October in southern Minnesota is cold: a typical start near 44F with 77% humidity, an average high of 53F and an average low of 36F. That's excellent racing weather and a miserable thirty minutes of standing around beforehand. Do enough long runs in the cold that you know exactly what your hands need, and dress for mile six instead of the start corral.

Is the Mankato Marathon a good Boston qualifier?

The Mankato Marathon is USATF certified and the race states its times can be used to qualify for Boston, and the 207 foot net drop is small enough that no downhill adjustment comes into play. Qualifying rates bounce because the field is small: 2.4% of finishers in 2025, 4.9% in 2024 and 10.3% in 2023, across fields of 381, 346 and 556. Read those as small sample noise rather than a trend about the course.

Is the Mankato Marathon a good first marathon?

A good first marathon for anyone comfortable in the cold. Official timing runs 6 hours 15 minutes, a field of 381 finishers in 2025 keeps everything simple, and the net drop makes the day slightly kinder than a pure flat course. The thing to prepare for is loneliness on course rather than difficulty underfoot.

Mankato Marathon questions, answered.

Is the Mankato Marathon downhill?

Net, yes, by 207 feet, from the Minnesota State campus down to City Center Mankato in the river valley. But the course also includes 583 feet of climbing alongside its 790 feet of descent, so it doesn't run like a downhill race. Train both directions, not just the drop.

How cold is the Mankato Marathon?

Cold. A typical race morning is around 44F with 77% humidity, and the day averages a high of 53F and a low of 36F. That's close to perfect for running a marathon and unpleasant for waiting in the corral at 7:20 a.m. Bring throwaway layers and gloves you don't mind losing.

How big is the Mankato Marathon?

Small. 381 runners finished in 2025, after 346 in 2024 and 556 in 2023. Packet pickup is quick, parking is easy, and you'll spend real time on course with nobody near you. If you rely on a pace group or a crowd for motivation, plan for their absence.

Is Mankato a good Boston qualifier?

It's certified and eligible, and the 207 foot net drop is small enough that no downhill adjustment comes into play. Qualifying rates swing hard on a small field: 2.4% in 2025, 4.9% in 2024, 10.3% in 2023. The course is fair, and the year to year percentages mostly reflect who showed up.
