Detroit, MIOctober 17, 2027

Start around July 25, 2027. The calendar below gives each phase a real date, then the course guidance shows where to make the build specific to Detroit Free Press Marathon.

The Detroit Free Press Marathon requires a passport. About two miles in you climb onto the Ambassador Bridge into Canada, run the Windsor riverfront, then come back to the United States underneath the river through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. Border documents go on the packing list alongside your shoes.

Does this window fit your starting point?

Use this window when your recent training is steady and the opening week will not be a mileage jump. If you are returning after a long break, twelve weeks is too little room to rebuild and peak at the same time.

  • Your weekly mileage has been consistent for the last six to eight weeks.
  • You have completed recent long runs and do not need to rebuild from three easy miles.
  • You can protect the same number of run days from week one through race week.
  • You are prepared to begin race-specific work early instead of using a long base phase.

These dates define the job of each phase. Your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days still decide the actual workouts inside them.

Settle

Weeks 1–2

Jul 26, 2027–Aug 8, 2027

Hold close to your current volume, establish the weekly rhythm, and make sure the opening load is honest.

Build

Weeks 3–7

Aug 9, 2027–Sep 12, 2027

Grow the long run and weekly work with step-back weeks intact. There is no room to repay missed mileage.

Peak

Weeks 8–10

Sep 13, 2027–Oct 3, 2027

Complete the most race-specific long runs, rehearse fueling, and practice the terrain that will decide the final 10K.

Taper

Weeks 11–12

Oct 4, 2027–Oct 17, 2027

Reduce volume, keep the routine familiar, and arrive on race day without trying to squeeze in one more big week.

How to train for the Detroit Free Press Marathon

Two Detroit specific sessions matter. First, put a climb in the first fifteen minutes of some long runs, so the Ambassador Bridge at mile two doesn't cost you an effort spike that you pay for at mile 22. Second, practice running a full mile purely by feel, because your watch goes dark in the tunnel.

The rest is even pacing work on flat ground. With a net change of nine feet across the marathon there's no terrain to recover on and no descent to bank. Long runs at goal pace finished with a negative split teach the exact skill this course rewards.

Plan for a slow patch on the bridge itself. The race asks runners not to stop for photos and it still bunches up, so budget a few seconds there and resist the urge to make them back over the following mile.

Build My Plan

12-week Detroit Free Press Marathon plan questions, answered.

When should I start a 12-week Detroit Free Press Marathon plan?

The 2027 Detroit Free Press Marathon is scheduled for October 17, 2027, so the 12-week window opens around July 25, 2027. Treat that as the outside edge of the window, then line week one up with the plan's normal weekly rhythm.

Is a 12-week plan long enough for the Detroit Free Press Marathon?

Use this window when your recent training is steady and the opening week will not be a mileage jump. If you are returning after a long break, twelve weeks is too little room to rebuild and peak at the same time. The course does not change the opening load you can handle, so choose from your current mileage and recent longest run before adding race-specific terrain.

How should I prepare for the Detroit Free Press Marathon course in 12 weeks?

Course-specific work starts early in a 12-week build. Put the race's terrain and expected conditions into long runs once the opening weeks feel controlled, without adding extra hard days.

What if the 12-week Detroit Free Press Marathon window has already started?

Do not double weeks or cram missed mileage into the remaining calendar. Use your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days to choose a plan that can enter at an appropriate point while preserving the taper.

Do you need a passport for the Detroit Free Press Marathon?

Yes. The marathon crosses into Canada, so every runner needs a valid passport, a WHTI compliant document, or an enhanced driver's license from Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont or Washington. The race also warns that past convictions including OWI or DUI can make a runner inadmissible to Canada without a special permit.

Is the Detroit Free Press Marathon flat?

Yes. The course gains 388 feet and loses 397 across 26.2 miles, a net drop of nine feet, with everything between 538 and 740 feet of elevation. The only meaningful climb is the Ambassador Bridge about two miles in. After that the race becomes an exercise in holding one steady effort.
