A flat course in mid May sounds easy and is not. Flat means you use the same muscles in the same range for four hours with nothing to break the rhythm, and it means your entire build happens through a Wisconsin winter.

The course: flat, mixed roads and trail, with Lambeau in the background
The EPIC Marathon course is described by the organizer as fast and flat, looping out from Ashwaubenon through Green Bay and Allouez and onto the Brown County trail system before returning to Cormier Road. Start and finish are the same place for every distance on the schedule, which makes race morning logistics about as simple as a marathon gets.
The trail sections matter more than the word suggests. A course that mixes pavement with a county trail system means changes in surface and footing, and often narrower running with fewer spectators than the road miles. If you have only trained on asphalt, several miles on packed trail will feel different underfoot even when the pace is identical.
The organizer publishes no elevation profile, no mile by mile route and no time limit, so treat flat as their description rather than a measured figure, and ask about the cutoff before you enter if you expect to be out past five hours.
How to train for the EPIC Marathon
Train for the EPIC Marathon by rehearsing goal pace in long, unbroken blocks, because a flat course gives you nothing to hide behind. On rolling terrain, every hill forces a change in stride and a moment of relief. Here you will hold one cadence for hours, so the failure mode is not blown quads at mile 19 but the slow drift where your form degrades and the pace goes with it.
Put two or three of your long runs on the surface you will race. If part of the course is county trail, get onto packed gravel or a rail trail for the back half of a long run and find out how your ankles and calves respond after two hours. Doing that in February is inconvenient, which is exactly why most of the field will not.
Then deal with the calendar. A mid May race means your 16 week build starts in January in the upper Midwest, so plan around snow and ice from the first week. Treadmill work for the hard sessions is fine. What is not optional is getting your long runs outdoors in wind, because a flat, exposed loop can hand you a headwind with no hill to break it up.
Getting in
Entry is straightforward. This is the third running of the festival, registration is open well over a year out, and prices step up as the date approaches rather than the race selling out. The marathon shares the morning with a half, relays and a 5K, all starting and finishing on Cormier Road. Since the organizer does not publish finisher counts, go in expecting to run stretches of the marathon on your own.
Where does the Green Bay Marathon get hard?
Unpublished, and on a course the organizer calls flat the hard part is usually late: the stretch past mile 20 where nothing about the terrain changes and your stride has been identical for three hours.
What is the weather like at the Green Bay Marathon?
There are no verified race morning norms published for this event, so do not build your race kit plan around a number. What is fixed is the calendar: a mid May race in northeast Wisconsin means most of your training happens in winter cold, then race day can be a good deal warmer than anything you trained through. Get at least three long runs in whatever spring warmth you can find before race week.
Is the Green Bay Marathon a good Boston qualifier?
Boston eligibility is not confirmed for this race. The organizer's marketing mentions chasing a Boston qualifier but publishes no USATF certification number that we could find, and there is no published finisher or qualifying rate history for the event yet. If you are running it as a qualifying attempt, email the organizer for the certification number first.
Is the Green Bay Marathon a good first marathon?
The flat profile and a single start and finish point make this a reasonable first marathon on paper. The catch is that the organizer publishes no time limit or course cutoff, which is the one thing a first timer most needs to know. Ask before you enter, especially if your realistic finish is over five and a half hours.
Green Bay Marathon questions, answered.
Is the EPIC Marathon in Green Bay flat?
The organizer describes the courses as fast and flat, running through Ashwaubenon, Green Bay, Allouez and the Brown County trail system. No elevation profile or gain figure is published, so treat flat as their description rather than a measured number. Train for sustained goal pace with no hills to break up your stride.
Where does the EPIC Marathon start and finish?
Both on Cormier Road, outside the EPIC Event Center in Ashwaubenon, just off Holmgren Way near Lambeau Field. Every distance in the festival uses the same start and finish, and the marathon goes off at 7:00 a.m. alongside the half marathon and the relays, so race morning logistics are simple.
Is the EPIC Marathon a good first marathon?
Possibly, with one caveat. The flat profile and shared start and finish are first timer friendly, but the organizer publishes no time limit or course cutoff, and that is the single most important thing to know if you expect to finish past five hours. Contact the race and confirm before entering.
When should the training build start for a mid May marathon in Wisconsin?
A 16 week build for a mid May race puts your first week in late January, and a 20 week build starts around the turn of the year. That means the bulk of your mileage happens in Wisconsin winter, so plan indoor options for quality sessions and keep long runs outdoors for wind exposure.
