The course: thirteen bridges and a hill near mile 12

The Eau Claire Marathon is a paved loop that starts and finishes in downtown Eau Claire, Wisconsin, covering about 590 feet of climbing inside a 125-foot band between roughly 770 and 895 feet of elevation. Net change is about zero. The climbing comes in repeated short rises, most of them at bridge approaches and river crossings.

The early miles head out through North Crossing and Old Wells Road, reaching mile 5.5 at what the race calls the Smile Mile. The course then runs out along Airport Road and Riverview Drive, passing mile 12.2 near a relay exchange, and it is right around mile 12 that runners consistently report the day's hardest climb. From there it turns back toward the city.

The last stretch is the payoff. You reach Boyd Park at mile 22, come into downtown between miles 23.1 and 23.6 with Wilson Park just off Harding Hill, and run First Avenue at mile 25.7 before finishing at Barstow. The final four miles are the loudest of the day, which matters more than it sounds when you arrive there tired.

How to train for Eau Claire

Training for the Eau Claire Marathon means practicing repeated short climbs at goal pace, because thirteen bridge crossings do to your legs what one big hill does, only spread out. Runners who train exclusively on flat ground often lose thirty seconds a mile in the back half without ever meeting a climb they would call hard.

Two sessions cover it. First, bridge or overpass repeats: 10 to 15 rises of 20 to 40 seconds at marathon effort with easy running between, so you learn to crest without spiking. Second, a long run with a real climb placed between miles 11 and 13, matching where this course puts its worst one, so the hill arrives when your legs are already loaded rather than fresh.

Then handle the calendar. A race on the first Sunday in May means your peak weeks fall in March, which across the northern half of the country means treadmills and darkness. Book the long runs first and treat the weather as a scheduling problem rather than a reason to skip one. A 12-week build starts in early February.

Getting in

Entry is open registration through the race's own site, with no qualifying time. The marathon has grown steadily, from 232 finishers in 2021 to 866 in 2026, and it calls itself the Biggest Small Town Race in the U.S. Register early enough to start a 16-week block in mid-January, since the race falls in the first days of May.
