Weeks 1–6
Oct 19, 2026–Nov 29, 2026
Set the routine, grow easy volume gradually, and finish each week with enough control to repeat it.
Newport News, VAMarch 7, 2027
Start around October 18, 2026. The calendar below gives each phase a real date, then the course guidance shows where to make the build specific to Newport News One City Marathon.
The Newport News One City Marathon is a point to point that runs the entire length of Newport News, Virginia, finishing downtown beside Newport News Shipbuilding, the only place in the country that builds aircraft carriers. The course is very flat: it never rises above about 71 feet and gives back only six feet net.
Use the longer window to make the early build calmer, not to add five months of hard training. The plan should begin close to your current load, hold most running easy, and delay the biggest race-specific work until the middle of the cycle.
These dates define the job of each phase. Your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days still decide the actual workouts inside them.

Set the routine, grow easy volume gradually, and finish each week with enough control to repeat it.
Weeks 7–13
Nov 30, 2026–Jan 17, 2027
Extend the long run, introduce race-specific terrain, and keep recovery weeks on the calendar.
Weeks 14–17
Jan 18, 2027–Feb 14, 2027
Complete the most demanding race rehearsals and settle fueling, pacing, shoes, and clothing before taper begins.
Weeks 18–20
Feb 15, 2027–Mar 7, 2027
Reduce the load, keep familiar running in the week, and let the work from the previous four months show up on race day.
Build general durability first. Add the race's hills, flat sustained running, downhill exposure, heat, or humidity in layers after the weekly rhythm is stable, then make the final long runs the most course-specific.
Read the full race guideTrain for One City by making even pacing automatic and by practicing wind. A course this flat, run in one direction across a coastal city in early March, hands you no terrain variety and no shelter. Two things decide your race: your discipline through the first 10 miles, and how you respond when a headwind arrives and stays.
Do your long runs on genuinely flat ground with long blocks at goal pace, and structure at least a third of them so the second half runs into the wind rather than with it. Most people naturally head out with a tailwind and come home into the breeze, which is the easy version. On a point to point you do not get to choose, so rehearse the hard one.
The other half of flat-course preparation is the part people skip. On unchanging ground your stride never varies, so calves, arches and hip flexors absorb identical loading for hours on end. Build that tolerance directly with progressive long runs and single leg strength work, and put a few deliberate cadence changes into every long effort to move the load around.
Current mileage, recent longest run, marathon experience, goal, and available days determine which plans rank first. After you choose and subscribe, Stride dates every workout through March 7, 2027.
The 2027 Newport News One City Marathon is scheduled for March 7, 2027, so the 20-week window opens around October 18, 2026. Treat that as the outside edge of the window, then line week one up with the plan's normal weekly rhythm.
Use the longer window to make the early build calmer, not to add five months of hard training. The plan should begin close to your current load, hold most running easy, and delay the biggest race-specific work until the middle of the cycle. The course does not change the opening load you can handle, so choose from your current mileage and recent longest run before adding race-specific terrain.

Do not double weeks or cram missed mileage into the remaining calendar. Use your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days to choose a plan that can enter at an appropriate point while preserving the taper.
Yes. Qualifying rates have run in double digits every year since 2022: 14.8 percent of finishers ran a Boston qualifying time in 2026, 13.9 percent in 2025 and 16.2 percent in 2024. The course is flat and certified with a net drop of only about six feet, so no downhill adjustment applies to a time run here.
Seven hours from the 7:00 a.m. start, which is a 16:00 per mile pace. The organizers enforce it with intermediate cutoffs at mile 6.5 by 8:45 a.m., mile 13.1 by 10:30 a.m., mile 18 by 11:45 a.m. and mile 23 by 1:10 p.m., so a slow first half cannot be made up later on.
Each page counts back from race day, maps the 4 phases to real dates, and applies the window to that course and its typical conditions.
