Weeks 1–4
Jun 20, 2027–Jul 17, 2027
Establish repeatable weeks, keep most running easy, and begin extending the long run without forcing the pace.
Hartford, CTOctober 9, 2027
Start around June 19, 2027. The calendar below gives each phase a real date, then the course guidance shows where to make the build specific to Hartford Marathon.
The Hartford Marathon starts on Capitol Avenue in front of the Connecticut State Capitol at 8 a.m. and finishes a few hundred yards away in Bushnell Park, just past the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch. Almost everything interesting about training for it sits in what happens between those two nearly adjacent points.
Use this window when you have a running base and want several weeks before the hardest marathon-specific work begins. The extra month over a 12-week plan creates more room for gradual long-run growth and recovery.
These dates define the job of each phase. Your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days still decide the actual workouts inside them.
Weeks 1–4
Jun 20, 2027–Jul 17, 2027
Establish repeatable weeks, keep most running easy, and begin extending the long run without forcing the pace.
Weeks 5–10
Jul 18, 2027–Aug 28, 2027
Increase the weekly load, preserve step-back weeks, and introduce the terrain and effort the race will require.
Weeks 11–13
Aug 29, 2027–Sep 18, 2027
Complete the biggest race-specific weeks and use long runs to lock in fueling, pacing, and equipment.
Weeks 14–16
Sep 19, 2027–Oct 9, 2027
Bring volume down while keeping the weekly rhythm familiar. Training is finished before race week begins.
Use the first month to establish consistency, then make long runs progressively more specific to the race's terrain and conditions. The course rehearsal should grow with the plan, not appear all at once in peak week.
Read the full race guideTrain for the Hartford Marathon backwards from its shape: hills early, then roughly fifteen quiet flat miles that you have to run largely on your own. The rolling section is modest at about 754 feet of gain, but it arrives while you still feel good, which is precisely when overspending is easiest and least noticeable.
Structure long runs so they climb in the first third and then hold goal pace on flat ground for the final two hours. Do several of those alone, with no group and no pack to sit behind, because that is what the East Hartford and South Windsor miles will be. Then rehearse the clock: an 8 a.m. gun is late by marathon standards, so practice a full breakfast and a longer pre-race window instead of defaulting to the 6 a.m. routine most training plans assume.
Current mileage, recent longest run, marathon experience, goal, and available days determine which plans rank first. After you choose and subscribe, Stride dates every workout through October 9, 2027.
The 2027 Hartford Marathon is scheduled for October 9, 2027, so the 16-week window opens around June 19, 2027. Treat that as the outside edge of the window, then line week one up with the plan's normal weekly rhythm.
Use this window when you have a running base and want several weeks before the hardest marathon-specific work begins. The extra month over a 12-week plan creates more room for gradual long-run growth and recovery. The course does not change the opening load you can handle, so choose from your current mileage and recent longest run before adding race-specific terrain.

Do not double weeks or cram missed mileage into the remaining calendar. Use your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days to choose a plan that can enter at an appropriate point while preserving the taper.
It is rolling rather than hilly, and the hills come early. The course climbs west toward Elizabeth Park in West Hartford over the opening miles, tops out around 182 feet, and totals roughly 754 feet of gain for the day. The back half, along the Connecticut River, is flat.
Quiet. The half separates around mile 8, and from there the marathon crosses the Founders Bridge and runs the East Hartford side of the river north to South Windsor and back. Expect flat road, thinner crowds and long stretches where you alone are responsible for holding the pace.
Each page counts back from race day, maps the 4 phases to real dates, and applies the window to that course and its typical conditions.
