Weeks 1–4
Jan 11, 2027–Feb 7, 2027
Establish repeatable weeks, keep most running easy, and begin extending the long run without forcing the pace.
Weott, CAMay 2, 2027
Start around January 10, 2027. The calendar below gives each phase a real date, then the course guidance shows where to make the build specific to Avenue of the Giants Marathon.
The redwoods along this course are tall enough to cut off your watch's satellite signal, and the organizers say so out loud. The Avenue of the Giants Marathon is a double out and back on paved road through Humboldt Redwoods State Park in Weott, California, starting at the Dyerville Bridge. It drew 545 finishers in 2026.
Use this window when you have a running base and want several weeks before the hardest marathon-specific work begins. The extra month over a 12-week plan creates more room for gradual long-run growth and recovery.
These dates define the job of each phase. Your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days still decide the actual workouts inside them.
Weeks 1–4
Jan 11, 2027–Feb 7, 2027
Establish repeatable weeks, keep most running easy, and begin extending the long run without forcing the pace.
Weeks 5–10
Feb 8, 2027–Mar 21, 2027
Increase the weekly load, preserve step-back weeks, and introduce the terrain and effort the race will require.
Weeks 11–13
Mar 22, 2027–Apr 11, 2027
Complete the biggest race-specific weeks and use long runs to lock in fueling, pacing, and equipment.
Weeks 14–16
Apr 12, 2027–May 2, 2027
Bring volume down while keeping the weekly rhythm familiar. Training is finished before race week begins.
Use the first month to establish consistency, then make long runs progressively more specific to the race's terrain and conditions. The course rehearsal should grow with the plan, not appear all at once in peak week.
Read the full race guideTrain for Avenue of the Giants by rehearsing pace without a watch. The old growth canopy blocks GPS in places, so build long runs where you cover the middle miles on perceived effort alone and check the clock only at known mile marks. That habit is worth more here than any hill session.
The second thing to train is the doubling back. You come through the start area again partway through the race and head straight out for another loop of the same road, which is a mental problem rather than a physical one. Rehearse it: run a long run as two out and backs from your car and make the second one the faster one. The single real climb rewards a few sessions of steady uphill running at marathon effort rather than sharp repeats, because it's gentle and drawn out rather than punchy.
Current mileage, recent longest run, marathon experience, goal, and available days determine which plans rank first. After you choose and subscribe, Stride dates every workout through May 2, 2027.
The 2027 Avenue of the Giants Marathon is scheduled for May 2, 2027, so the 16-week window opens around January 10, 2027. Treat that as the outside edge of the window, then line week one up with the plan's normal weekly rhythm.
Use this window when you have a running base and want several weeks before the hardest marathon-specific work begins. The extra month over a 12-week plan creates more room for gradual long-run growth and recovery. The course does not change the opening load you can handle, so choose from your current mileage and recent longest run before adding race-specific terrain.

Do not double weeks or cram missed mileage into the remaining calendar. Use your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days to choose a plan that can enter at an appropriate point while preserving the taper.
Not physically. Total climbing is about 695 feet across 26.2 miles and the net change is 6 feet, with the organizers describing only one significant hill. The difficulty is psychological. It's a double out and back, so you cover the same stretches of road twice and pass the start area mid-race.
The old growth redwoods along the course stand around 300 feet tall, and the organizers warn that they sometimes block satellite signal on running watches. Expect your pace and distance readings to drift. Run the middle of the race on effort and use the course mile markers to check yourself instead of trusting the watch.
Each page counts back from race day, maps the 4 phases to real dates, and applies the window to that course and its typical conditions.
