Weeks 1–4
Nov 15, 2026–Dec 12, 2026
Establish repeatable weeks, keep most running easy, and begin extending the long run without forcing the pace.
Albany, GAMarch 6, 2027
Start around November 14, 2026. The calendar below gives each phase a real date, then the course guidance shows where to make the build specific to Albany Marathon.
The Albany Marathon runs a flat, USATF-certified 26.2 through south Georgia on the first Saturday in March, starts at 7:00 a.m., and pays out a $12,000 prize purse with $3,000 to the men's and women's winners. That last detail tells you something about the field. Races this size usually pay nothing, and a purse pulls in people who came to run a number rather than to finish one.
Use this window when you have a running base and want several weeks before the hardest marathon-specific work begins. The extra month over a 12-week plan creates more room for gradual long-run growth and recovery.
These dates define the job of each phase. Your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days still decide the actual workouts inside them.
Weeks 1–4
Nov 15, 2026–Dec 12, 2026
Establish repeatable weeks, keep most running easy, and begin extending the long run without forcing the pace.
Weeks 5–10
Dec 13, 2026–Jan 23, 2027
Increase the weekly load, preserve step-back weeks, and introduce the terrain and effort the race will require.
Weeks 11–13
Jan 24, 2027–Feb 13, 2027
Complete the biggest race-specific weeks and use long runs to lock in fueling, pacing, and equipment.
Weeks 14–16
Feb 14, 2027–Mar 6, 2027
Bring volume down while keeping the weekly rhythm familiar. Training is finished before race week begins.
Use the first month to establish consistency, then make long runs progressively more specific to the race's terrain and conditions. The course rehearsal should grow with the plan, not appear all at once in peak week.
Read the full race guideTrain for the Albany Marathon by building pacing discipline rather than hill strength. A flat certified course rewards runners who can hold one honest effort for 26 miles and it punishes anyone who banks time early. Your long runs should be continuous, on flat road, at goal marathon effort, without the terrain-driven surges a hilly course hands you for free.
The specific risk on unvarying ground is repetition. Same stride, same cadence, same muscles, for three or four hours. Add two strength sessions a week through the build, weighted the way a flat race needs it: single leg work, calf and soleus loading, and hip stability. Runners who skip that on flat courses tend to find out about it somewhere past mile 20.
Then build for the air. Whatever the temperature does on race morning, south Georgia in March is not dry, so do a meaningful share of your long runs in humid conditions and rehearse a drinking schedule you can actually hold. Humidity does not slow you down at mile 5. It shows up at mile 22 as a heart rate you cannot explain.
Current mileage, recent longest run, marathon experience, goal, and available days determine which plans rank first. After you choose and subscribe, Stride dates every workout through March 6, 2027.
The 2027 Albany Marathon is scheduled for March 6, 2027, so the 16-week window opens around November 14, 2026. Treat that as the outside edge of the window, then line week one up with the plan's normal weekly rhythm.
Use this window when you have a running base and want several weeks before the hardest marathon-specific work begins. The extra month over a 12-week plan creates more room for gradual long-run growth and recovery. The course does not change the opening load you can handle, so choose from your current mileage and recent longest run before adding race-specific terrain.

Do not double weeks or cram missed mileage into the remaining calendar. Use your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days to choose a plan that can enter at an appropriate point while preserving the taper.
On paper, yes. The Albany Marathon is flat and USATF certified, and the organizers say more than 20% of marathon finishers run a qualifying time. That is their number rather than a verified one, but the profile supporting it is real. A flat certified March course in the Southeast is a defensible choice for a qualifying attempt.
The Albany Marathon starts at 7:00 a.m., with wheelchair and hand crank athletes starting 15 minutes earlier at 6:45 a.m. An early start on a March morning in south Georgia is deliberate, since it puts most of the field on course before the day warms up. Plan to be at the start area well before 6:30.
Each page counts back from race day, maps the 4 phases to real dates, and applies the window to that course and its typical conditions.
