12-Week Whitefish Marathon Training Plan

Whitefish, MTMay 22, 2027

Start around February 27, 2027. The calendar below gives each phase a real date, then the course guidance shows where to make the build specific to Whitefish Marathon.

The Whitefish Marathon is an out and back, which means every climb you take on the way out arrives again as a descent on the way home, and it carries about 1,170 feet of climbing across 26.2 miles of northwest Montana road. 257 runners finished it in 2026. That is a small enough field that you will spend long stretches of this race entirely alone.

Does this window fit your starting point?

Use this window when your recent training is steady and the opening week will not be a mileage jump. If you are returning after a long break, twelve weeks is too little room to rebuild and peak at the same time.

  • Your weekly mileage has been consistent for the last six to eight weeks.
  • You have completed recent long runs and do not need to rebuild from three easy miles.
  • You can protect the same number of run days from week one through race week.
  • You are prepared to begin race-specific work early instead of using a long base phase.

The 12-week Whitefish Marathon calendar

These dates define the job of each phase. Your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days still decide the actual workouts inside them.

Settle

Weeks 1–2

Feb 28, 2027–Mar 13, 2027

Hold close to your current volume, establish the weekly rhythm, and make sure the opening load is honest.

Build

Weeks 3–7

Mar 14, 2027–Apr 17, 2027

Grow the long run and weekly work with step-back weeks intact. There is no room to repay missed mileage.

Peak

Weeks 8–10

Apr 18, 2027–May 8, 2027

Complete the most race-specific long runs, rehearse fueling, and practice the terrain that will decide the final 10K.

Taper

Weeks 11–12

May 9, 2027–May 22, 2027

Reduce volume, keep the routine familiar, and arrive on race day without trying to squeeze in one more big week.

Course-specific work starts early in a 12-week build. Put the race's terrain and expected conditions into long runs once the opening weeks feel controlled, without adding extra hard days.

How to train for the Whitefish Marathon

Train the Whitefish Marathon for repeated rolling terrain in both directions and for running alone. With about 1,170 feet of climb and 1,166 feet of descent across an out and back, every grade you meet in the first half returns reversed in the second, so the specific preparation is a hilly route you run out and back rather than as a loop.

Make that literal. Pick a rolling road, run out for an hour and come back on the same road, and pay attention to how different the return feels. On a loop the climbs and descents distribute themselves. On an out and back they cluster, and the ones you found easiest going out are the ones that hurt most coming back.

Then train descending specifically. Downhill running under fatigue is the failure mode on this course, and eccentric quad damage is not something you can improvise on race day. Add controlled downhill running at goal effort in the final hour of your long runs for the last six to eight weeks, with a short quick stride rather than braking.

Practice running solo too. With 257 finishers in 2026 across a full and a half that start together, you will have company for the first few miles and very little after that. Do at least three long runs completely alone at goal effort, because generating and holding your own pace with nobody around is a skill, and this race will ask for it.

The altitude is a minor factor rather than a major one. The course sits around 3,000 feet, which is enough to take a small edge off your pace at threshold if you live at sea level but nowhere near enough to reshape your training. Run by effort in the first half and it takes care of itself.

Build My Plan

12-week Whitefish Marathon plan questions, answered.

When should I start a 12-week Whitefish Marathon plan?

The 2027 Whitefish Marathon is scheduled for May 22, 2027, so the 12-week window opens around February 27, 2027. Treat that as the outside edge of the window, then line week one up with the plan's normal weekly rhythm.

Is a 12-week plan long enough for the Whitefish Marathon?

Use this window when your recent training is steady and the opening week will not be a mileage jump. If you are returning after a long break, twelve weeks is too little room to rebuild and peak at the same time. The course does not change the opening load you can handle, so choose from your current mileage and recent longest run before adding race-specific terrain.

How should I prepare for the Whitefish Marathon course in 12 weeks?

Course-specific work starts early in a 12-week build. Put the race's terrain and expected conditions into long runs once the opening weeks feel controlled, without adding extra hard days.

What if the 12-week Whitefish Marathon window has already started?

Do not double weeks or cram missed mileage into the remaining calendar. Use your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days to choose a plan that can enter at an appropriate point while preserving the taper.

Is the Whitefish Marathon hilly?

Yes, in a rolling way. The Whitefish Marathon carries about 1,170 feet of climbing and 1,166 feet of descent, sitting between roughly 2,999 and 3,272 feet of elevation. That 273 foot range with over a thousand feet of climb means the road undulates repeatedly, and because it is an out and back you run every grade twice, reversed.

How big is the Whitefish Marathon?

Very small. 257 runners finished the marathon in 2026, up from 208 in 2025, 178 in 2024 and 127 in 2023. All races start together at 8:00 a.m. and the half splits off after 13.1 miles, so expect company early and long solo stretches later. That is a feature if you want a quiet race.
