Weeks 1–2
Feb 7, 2027–Feb 20, 2027
Hold close to your current volume, establish the weekly rhythm, and make sure the opening load is honest.
Shiprock, NMMay 1, 2027
Start around February 6, 2027. The calendar below gives each phase a real date, then the course guidance shows where to make the build specific to Shiprock Marathon.
The Shiprock Marathon never drops below about 4,988 feet and tops out near 5,563, so the entire race is run a mile above sea level with the Shiprock Pinnacle standing over it. It starts and finishes at the Shiprock Youth Center in Shiprock, New Mexico, at 7 a.m., and it is an out and back with 838 feet of climbing.
Use this window when your recent training is steady and the opening week will not be a mileage jump. If you are returning after a long break, twelve weeks is too little room to rebuild and peak at the same time.
These dates define the job of each phase. Your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days still decide the actual workouts inside them.

Hold close to your current volume, establish the weekly rhythm, and make sure the opening load is honest.
Weeks 3–7
Feb 21, 2027–Mar 27, 2027
Grow the long run and weekly work with step-back weeks intact. There is no room to repay missed mileage.
Weeks 8–10
Mar 28, 2027–Apr 17, 2027
Complete the most race-specific long runs, rehearse fueling, and practice the terrain that will decide the final 10K.
Weeks 11–12
Apr 18, 2027–May 1, 2027
Reduce volume, keep the routine familiar, and arrive on race day without trying to squeeze in one more big week.
Course-specific work starts early in a 12-week build. Put the race's terrain and expected conditions into long runs once the opening weeks feel controlled, without adding extra hard days.
Read the full race guideTrain for the Shiprock Marathon by preparing for the altitude you cannot replicate and the long descent you can. If you live near sea level, accept the altitude cost instead of fighting it: set a goal meaningfully slower than your flat-course equivalent, run the first half by effort rather than by watch, and arrive as late as your travel allows, since the first days at altitude are the worst ones to race in.
The trainable half is the descent. Build long gradual downhill running into your last eight weeks so the eccentric load is familiar, and finish long runs on a downgrade rather than a climb, because that is the shape of this race. Hydration deserves its own line: at around 46 percent humidity and over 5,000 feet, you lose more fluid than you feel, so practice drinking on schedule instead of by thirst. Stride matches you to one of 14 marathon plans built on the most proven training methodologies in the sport, maps every week from today to race day, and adjusts when travel or a missed week gets in the way.
Current mileage, recent longest run, marathon experience, goal, and available days determine which plans rank first. After you choose and subscribe, Stride dates every workout through May 1, 2027.
The 2027 Shiprock Marathon is scheduled for May 1, 2027, so the 12-week window opens around February 6, 2027. Treat that as the outside edge of the window, then line week one up with the plan's normal weekly rhythm.
Use this window when your recent training is steady and the opening week will not be a mileage jump. If you are returning after a long break, twelve weeks is too little room to rebuild and peak at the same time. The course does not change the opening load you can handle, so choose from your current mileage and recent longest run before adding race-specific terrain.

Do not double weeks or cram missed mileage into the remaining calendar. Use your current mileage, recent longest run, experience, goal, and available days to choose a plan that can enter at an appropriate point while preserving the taper.
The whole course runs above 4,988 feet and reaches about 5,563 feet at its highest point, so you are a mile above sea level for the entire race. Sea level runners should expect their usual marathon pace to cost meaningfully more effort and plan a slower target accordingly.
No. Only about 0.5 percent of 2026 finishers ran a qualifying time, roughly one runner in a field of 187, after 2.4 percent in 2025 and 6 percent in 2024. The course is certified and eligible, but altitude plus 838 feet of climbing makes fast times rare. Qualify somewhere else.
