So the flatness is a red herring. This course carries about 286 feet of climb across 26.2 miles and sits between 3 and 39 feet of elevation, and yet only 3.7% of finishers ran a Boston qualifying time in 2025 and 4.1% in 2024. Terrain is not what slows people down here. Heat is, and heat is the thing you can actually prepare for.

The course: out and back along the Indian River, twice over
The Space Coast Marathon starts and finishes at Cocoa Riverfront Park at 401 Riveredge Boulevard, running north along Indian River Drive to a turnaround, back through Cocoa Village, then south on Rockledge Drive where it merges with the half marathon course for the second half. The finish comes in by Harrison Street. Marathoners go at 6:00 a.m. and half marathoners at 6:15 a.m.
The organizer calls it a partially shaded, mostly flat waterfront course, and the elevation backs that up: between about 3 and 39 feet, with 286 feet of climb and 286 feet of descent. Partially shaded is the phrase to sit with. Some of this course has tree cover and some of it does not, and by the second half the sun is up.
Both distances are USATF certified and the course closes at 1:00 p.m., a seven hour limit. The aid stations run a space theme, which fits a race that has been building around the same idea for over half a century.
How to train for the Space Coast Marathon
Train the Space Coast Marathon for heat acclimation above everything else. On a course this flat, with 286 feet of climb across 26.2 miles, the terrain will not decide your race. A 6:00 a.m. start near 64F and 84% humidity that warms toward 71F will, and heat adaptation is one of the few training effects that reliably shows up in a matter of weeks.
Do it deliberately in the final four to six weeks. Move two runs a week, including one long run, into the warmest part of the day. Ten to fourteen consecutive days of heat exposure produces most of the adaptation, so a concentrated block in the month before race day is more useful than occasional hot runs across the whole cycle.
Rehearse your fluid and sodium plan on those hot runs rather than reading about it. Weigh yourself before and after a long run in the heat and learn your actual sweat rate. Runners who arrive at Cocoa with a plan they have never tested in humidity are the ones walking on Rockledge Drive.
For pacing, the structure of the course helps you. You run north and back before you head south, so you see the same road twice and you get an early read on your own effort. Use the return to the village around halfway as an honest checkpoint, and if the day is warmer than you planned, adjust your goal there rather than at mile 20.
Getting in
This one fills. Both the marathon and half marathon have gone to waiting lists, so treat registration as something to do the day it opens rather than something to get to. Pricing is tiered and rises at a set deadline. Finisher numbers have sat between roughly 820 and 1,000 in recent years, which is a small field for a race with this much demand, and that is the reason the waitlist exists.
Where does the Space Coast Marathon get hard?
The southbound Rockledge Drive half, where the sun is fully up, the shade is only partial, and the flat road gives your legs no variation to hide behind.
What is the weather like at the Space Coast Marathon?
Race morning in Cocoa in late November typically starts near 64F with humidity around 84% under clear skies and a northwesterly around 6 mph, with an average high near 71F and a mean around 64F. That is warm for a marathon, and the 6:00 a.m. start exists to buy you dark, cooler miles early. Do a concentrated block of hot weather running in the last four to six weeks and test your fluids in it.
Is the Space Coast Marathon a good Boston qualifier?
The Space Coast Marathon is USATF certified and a legitimate Boston qualifier, and the organizer promotes it as one, but the numbers are sober. 3.7% of finishers ran a qualifying time in 2025, 4.1% in 2024 and 3.4% in 2023. On a course with 286 feet of total climb, that rate is about the weather rather than the terrain, so a qualifying attempt here lives or dies on how the morning turns out.
Is the Space Coast Marathon a good first marathon?
It is a good first marathon with one caveat. The seven hour limit closing at 1:00 p.m. is generous, the course is flat, and the space theme makes for a genuinely fun day. The caveat is that a first timer out for six or seven hours is running through the warmest part of a Florida morning, so build heat tolerance and go out slower than feels right.
Space Coast Marathon questions, answered.
Is the Space Coast Marathon flat?
Yes. The Space Coast Marathon sits between about 3 and 39 feet of elevation with roughly 286 feet of total climbing, and the organizer describes it as a partially shaded, mostly flat waterfront course along the Indian River. Terrain will not be your limiter here. Late November Florida heat and humidity will be.
How hot does the Space Coast Marathon get?
Warm enough to matter. Race mornings typically start near 64F with humidity around 84% and warm toward an average high near 71F. That is why the marathon goes off at 6:00 a.m. in the dark. Anyone out past four hours finishes in the heat, so heat acclimation is the highest value training you can do.
Is the Space Coast Marathon a good Boston qualifier?
It is certified and eligible, but the rates are modest: 3.7% of finishers qualified in 2025, 4.1% in 2024 and 3.4% in 2023. The course is flat enough that terrain is not the problem. The warm, humid late November mornings are, so a qualifying attempt here depends heavily on the weather that day.
Is the Space Coast Marathon worth traveling for?
If you want a small, warm, wholly committed themed race, yes. It is the oldest marathon in Florida, it runs a waterfront course along the Indian River from Cocoa Riverfront Park, and the space theme extends down to the aid stations. It also sells out to a waiting list, so decide early rather than late.
