Maui Oceanfront Marathon Training Plan, Matched to You
Wailea, HIJanuary 17, 2027
Maui Oceanfront is the island marathon built for scenery first: a start at the Shops at Wailea, then miles along South Kihei Road and the Highway 30 shoulder with the ocean on one side and mountains on the other. Whales, pullouts, and beach picnic spots for friends make race day feel like a Maui day out that also happens to be 26.2.
It is also a Boston Qualifier on a certified road course, so the beauty does not excuse sloppy training. Stride matches you to a plan for your experience and goal, then maps every week from today to January race morning.

The course: Wailea start, oceanfront all the way
The field starts in the Shops at Wailea parking area, loops the resort stretch, then settles onto South Kihei Road through oceanfront Kihei Town before climbing onto Highway 30 above Maalaea Bay around mile 13. From there the course continues oceanfront toward Launiupoko Beach Park on asphalt and the road shoulder bike path.
Expect exposed sun, coastal wind, and long stretches where the scenery is the crowd. Aid and shade discipline matter more than on a downtown major. The course was measured and certified for Boston Qualifying, so treat pacing like a real race even when the views beg you to cruise.
How to train for Maui Oceanfront
Build heat and sun tolerance into your long runs. Even in January, Maui means brightness and humidity most mainlanders underestimate: practice drinking on the run, easy effort in warm conditions, and pacing by feel when the wind pushes or pulls along the coast.
Keep some sustained road miles in training. This race rewards strong shoulders and steady aerobic fitness more than climbing legs; long stretches on flat asphalt teach the rhythm the middle miles demand. A mid-January date also means a fall-into-winter buildup, so map your holidays early and protect the long-run streak.
Getting in
Community non-profit race with open registration through the event site. Field size stays smaller than the majors, so you usually get race-day space to run your own race along the oceanfront.
Maui Oceanfront Marathon questions, answered.
How long do I need to train for the Maui Oceanfront Marathon?
Most Stride marathon plans run 12 to 20 weeks. Tell Stride your experience level and race date and every week from today to Wailea gets mapped, including warm-weather long-run practice for island conditions.
Is Maui Oceanfront a Boston Qualifier?
Yes. The course is USA Track & Field / AIMS certified and can qualify you for Boston when you hit the standard for your age and gender.
Where does the race start and finish?
The start is at the Shops at Wailea. The course runs oceanfront through Kihei and along Highway 30 toward Launiupoko Beach Park outside west Maui.
What makes Maui Oceanfront different from Honolulu?
Smaller field, a Wailea start, and nearly continuous oceanfront running instead of Diamond Head and the Kalanianaole highway out-and-back. Both are Hawaiian marathons; Maui trades Honolulu's fireworks and mass energy for scenery and elbow room.
Your race is the center of everything.
