Little Rock Marathon training plan: course, start dates, and plan options
Little Rock, ARMarch 7, 2027
The Little Rock Marathon hands out what the organizers call the largest marathon finisher's medal in the world, and it builds the rest of the race around the same idea: everybody gets to finish. There is a 5 a.m. early start for approved runners who need up to eight hours, thirteen aid stations, and a course that starts and finishes on LaHarpe Boulevard behind the Statehouse Convention Center.

The course itself is friendlier at the ends than in the middle. It runs past the State Capitol around mile 8, climbs Kavanaugh Boulevard through miles 9 and 10, then drops to the riverfront trail from about mile 11. Runners who treat the first eight miles as flat and easy tend to meet Kavanaugh with less than they wanted.

The course: a loop of the capital with the climbing packed into the middle
Little Rock is a mostly loop course that starts and finishes on LaHarpe Boulevard behind the Statehouse Convention Center, described by the organizers as a running and walking tour of Arkansas' capital city. The route passes the State Capitol area around mile 8, takes on Kavanaugh Boulevard through miles 9 and 10, and picks up the riverfront trail from roughly mile 11 onward.
Ask the race about hills and they answer, "What hills? It depends on your perspective." That is a fair summary of a course that is not mountainous and is definitely not flat. Published figures for total climbing vary depending on the source, so treat the profile as rolling with a real climb in the middle rather than as a number.
Thirteen aid stations carry water, lemon lime sports drink and gels later in the race, each with medical support and portable toilets. The finish line closes at 1 p.m., which is six hours from the 7 a.m. start and eight hours from the 5 a.m. early start.
How to train for the Little Rock Marathon
Train Little Rock by putting hills in the middle of your long runs, not at the end. The climbing here is concentrated around miles 8 through 11, at the point in a marathon when you feel best and are most likely to spend badly. The skill this course rewards is climbing under control while your legs are still fresh enough to lie to you.
Build long runs with a hilly middle third and a flat, controlled finish. Run the climbs at goal effort, let the pace slip, and refuse to make it back on the descent. Then practice the transition the course actually gives you: coming off a climb onto flat riverfront trail and re-establishing rhythm quickly rather than drifting for two miles while your heart rate settles.
Also train for time on feet rather than for a hard number, because Little Rock is set up for exactly that. The 5 a.m. early start exists for runners who need six to eight hours, and pace groups run all the way out to eight hours. If your goal is to finish comfortably, walk breaks belong in your long runs from the beginning, not improvised at mile 18.

Getting in
Registration is first come and the marathon has historically sold out roughly two months before race day, so entering in the fall is safer than entering in January. The 5 a.m. early start requires advance approval and is intended only for marathoners who need more than six hours, and approved early starters get a different colored bib. Starting early with a fast pace is treated as a serious violation rather than a technicality, so enter the start you actually intend to run.
Where does the Little Rock Marathon get hard?
Miles 8 through 11, past the Capitol and up Kavanaugh Boulevard, where the course's real climbing lands while you still feel strong enough to attack it.
What is the weather like at the Little Rock Marathon?
Early March in Little Rock usually gives you a start near 47F with humidity around 78 percent, clear skies and a light southerly wind, warming to an average high near 60F. That is comfortable running weather that turns warm for anyone out past five hours, which describes a large share of this field. Train some long runs in mild, humid air rather than only on cold mornings.
Is the Little Rock Marathon a good Boston qualifier?
Little Rock is a certified Boston qualifying course, but it is not the race to chase a qualifier at. About 3 percent of finishers ran a qualifying time in 2026 and 4.3 percent did in 2025, and the rate has stayed under 5 percent every year since 2021. Part of that is the rolling middle miles, and part is a field that deliberately makes room for slower runners.
Is the Little Rock Marathon a good first marathon?
This is one of the better first marathons in the country if finishing is the goal. Approved runners can take the 5 a.m. early start and use the full eight hours, pace groups run out to 8:00, and thirteen aid stations carry medical support. The one thing to respect is the middle of the course, where the climbing arrives while you still feel fresh.
Little Rock Marathon questions, answered.
How hilly is the Little Rock Marathon?
Rolling rather than mountainous, with the climbing concentrated in the middle. The course passes the State Capitol around mile 8 and climbs Kavanaugh Boulevard through miles 9 and 10 before reaching the riverfront trail near mile 11. The organizers joke about the hills, but they arrive at the point where runners are most likely to overspend.
Is the Little Rock Marathon good for a first marathon?
Yes, it is one of the friendliest in the country. Approved runners can take a 5 a.m. early start and use up to eight hours, pace groups extend to 8:00, and thirteen aid stations carry water, sports drink, gels and medical support. The finish line closes at 1 p.m. for every start time.
What is the deal with the Little Rock Marathon medal?
The organizers describe it as the largest marathon finisher's medal in the world, and it is the race's signature. Shorter distances at the event get proportionally smaller medals. It is a real reason people travel here, and it tells you something honest about who the race is designed for: finishers, not just fast runners.
Can you qualify for Boston at Little Rock?
The course is certified and eligible, but very few people do it. About 3 percent of finishers ran a qualifying time in 2026 and 4.3 percent in 2025, with the rate under 5 percent every year since 2021. If a qualifier is the point of your season, pick a flatter course and come here for the experience.
