It's a downtown loop that starts and finishes in the same place and works through Indy's historic neighborhoods and cultural districts, with a cold 8:00 a.m. start in early November. 6,674 people finished it in 2025 and general registration sold out ahead of the following year. The flatness that makes it fast is also what makes it easy to ruin.

The course: 302 feet of climbing and an 8:00 a.m. start
The Indianapolis Monumental Marathon is a USATF certified downtown loop with about 302 feet of total climbing and 302 feet of descent, everything between 699 and 776 feet of elevation. The organizers call it fast and flat and the profile agrees with them. The marathon starts at 8:00 a.m. on a Saturday in early November.
The route winds through downtown Indianapolis and a number of the city's historic neighborhoods and cultural districts, past the monuments the race takes its name from, and returns to the same downtown finish. Bag drop, family meeting points and somewhere warm to sit afterwards are all within a few blocks of each other.
The flatness is the entire design, and it cuts both ways. There's no hill to break your stride, no descent to give your quads a different job, and nothing in the profile to force a pace reset. That's a gift if you're disciplined about the first ten miles and a trap if you aren't.
How to train for the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon
Train for Monumental by rehearsing one thing until it's automatic: holding a single goal pace on flat ground for a very long time. On a course with 302 feet of climbing, your result is decided almost entirely by whether you ran the first ten miles at the pace you planned or the pace that felt easy on fresh legs in 40F air.
Build the specific session for it. Two or three times in the block, run 16 to 20 miles with the last 10 at goal pace on the flattest route you can find, and refuse to let rolling terrain break the rhythm for you. Flat running loads the same muscles at the same angle for hours, which is exactly why a flat marathon can hurt more in the final six miles than a rolling one.
Then account for the seasons. A 16 week block starts in mid July, so you'll do your hardest work in Indiana summer heat and race at a start line averaging 40F. Your August goal pace efforts will feel much harder than what you can actually run in November, so set the race goal off a cool weather tune up rather than off a sweaty long run.
Last, practise the cold start. Standing around at 8:00 a.m. in 40F with 81% humidity for forty minutes stiffens legs that were warm in the hotel. Do a couple of long runs where you deliberately stand outside in your race kit for twenty minutes first, then run the opening miles at goal pace on cold legs.
Getting in
Register early. General registration for all in person distances sold out ahead of the 2026 race, leaving limited charity entries as the only route in, and the field has grown from 3,956 finishers in 2021 to 6,674 in 2025. Registration runs through the organizer's site. If you're still deciding in September, you're probably deciding too late.
Where does the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon get hard?
Miles 20 to 26, where nothing in the terrain has changed for two and a half hours and the pace that felt free at mile 8 stops feeling free.
What is the weather like at the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon?
Race morning in Indianapolis averages about 40F with humidity near 81%, a light north wind and partly cloudy skies, and the day only reaches an average high near 58F. That's close to ideal for running fast and genuinely cold for standing around before an 8:00 a.m. start. Bring throwaway layers and dress for mile 3 rather than for the corral.
Is the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon a good Boston qualifier?
By rate, this is a strong qualifier. 18.8% of finishers ran Boston qualifying times in 2025, 18% in 2024 and 21.8% in 2023, on a USATF certified, Boston eligible course, and the organizers say the race has produced thousands of qualifiers since it began in 2008. Roughly one runner in five leaving with a qualifier is a rate few marathons match.
Is the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon a good first marathon?
Yes, and the organizers say so themselves. A flat certified loop, a downtown start and finish, cool November air and 6,674 finishers in 2025 add up to plenty of company and plenty of support. The catch for a first timer is that flat courses tempt you into a fast first hour and there's no early hill to slow you down.
Indianapolis Monumental Marathon questions, answered.
Is the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon really flat?
Yes. The course gains about 302 feet and loses 302 across 26.2 miles, with every step between 699 and 776 feet of elevation. There's no hill worth training for. What that profile does mean is unbroken repetition, so the last six miles ask more of your legs than the elevation numbers suggest.
Is Indianapolis Monumental a good Boston qualifier?
It's one of the strongest. 18.8% of finishers ran qualifying times in 2025, 18% in 2024 and 21.8% in 2023 on a USATF certified course. Roughly one runner in five leaving with a qualifier is a rate very few marathons match, and the flat profile plus cool November air is why.
Does the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon sell out?
Yes. General registration for all in person distances sold out before the 2026 race, leaving only limited charity entries. The marathon has grown from 3,956 finishers in 2021 to 6,674 in 2025, so treat entry as something you do early rather than something you get to eventually.
What is the weather like at the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon?
Cold at the start and cool all day. Race morning averages around 40F with 81% humidity and a light north wind, and the average high only reaches 58F. That's excellent racing weather and a genuinely cold wait before the 8:00 a.m. gun, so plan throwaway layers you don't mind losing.
